Systems, methods, and media for presenting media content

Abstract

Systems, methods, and media for presenting media content are provided. In some implementations, a system for presenting media content is provided, the system comprising: a hardware processor that is programmed to: establish a connection with a media playback device; respond to a discovery request from a computing device presenting a media content item; establish a persistent communication channel with the computing device over a network in response to a request from the computing device to establish the persistent communication channel; receive identifying information of the media content item being presented by the computing device and identifying information of a source of the media content item being presented by the computing device; request the media content item from the identified source of the media content item as a stream of media content; and cause the media content item to be presented using the media playback device.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method for controlling a media receiving device comprising:
 determining that a command to present a media content item on a media playback device has been received by a computing device in wireless communication with the media receiving device;   obtaining a portion of the media content item from a server using a wireless connection; and   transferring the portion of the media content item obtained from the server to the media playback device using a wired connection.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 receiving, from the computing device, an instruction for controlling a presentation of the portion of the media content item on the media playback device.   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the instruction corresponds to at least one of a play command for starting the presentation of the portion of the media content item and a pause command for stopping the presentation of the portion of the media content item. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein transferring the portion of the media content item to the media playback device causes the portion of the media content item to be displayed on a display of the media playback device. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 determining the portion of the media content item obtained from the server based on an instruction for controlling a presentation of the media content item received by the computing device.   
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the wired connection is an HDMI connection. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the media receiving device is included in the media playback device. 
     
     
         8 . One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by a media receiving device, cause the media receiving device to perform operations comprising:
 determining that a command to present a media content item on a media playback device has been received by a computing device in wireless communication with the media receiving device;   obtaining a portion of the media content item from a server using a wireless connection; and   transferring the portion of the media content item obtained from the server to the media playback device using a wired connection.   
     
     
         9 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 8 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving, from the computing device, an instruction for controlling a presentation of the portion of the media content item on the media playback device.   
     
     
         10 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 9 , wherein the instruction corresponds to at least one of a play command for starting the presentation of the portion of the media content item and a pause command for stopping the presentation of the portion of the media content item. 
     
     
         11 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 8 , wherein transferring the portion of the media content item to the media playback device causes the portion of the media content item to be displayed on a display of the media playback device. 
     
     
         12 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 8 , the operations further comprising:
 determining the portion of the media content item obtained from the server based on an instruction for controlling a presentation of the media content item received by the computing device.   
     
     
         13 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 8 , wherein the wired connection is an HDMI connection. 
     
     
         14 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of  claim 8 , wherein the media receiving device is included in the media playback device. 
     
     
         15 . A system comprising:
 a media playback device;   a media receiving device, wherein the media receiving device is connected to the media playback device using a wired connection and connected to a server using a wireless connection; and   a computing device having a display, wherein the system is configured to:
 display information associated with a media content item on the display of the computing device; 
 receive, by the computing device, a command to present the media content item on the media playback device; 
 in response to receiving the command, obtain, by the media receiving device, the media content item from the server using the wireless connection; and 
 in response to obtaining the media content item from the server, transfer the media content item from the media receiving device to the media playback device using the wired connection. 
   
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the information associated with the media content item is a title of the media content item. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the command is received in response to a user interacting with a display of the computing device. 
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the system is further configured to:
 present the media content item on the display of the computing device.   
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein transferring the media content item to the media playback device causes the media content item to be displayed on a display of the media playback device. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the wired connection is an HDMI connection.
