Chewable dissolvable nicotine tablet

Abstract

A nicotine tablet that includes a solid solution of soluble fiber and one or more sugar alcohols, the solid solution having a glass transition temperature of less than 40° C., and nicotine or a derivative thereof dispersed in the solid solution such that the nicotine or derivative thereof is released from the tablet when the tablet is chewed or dissolved within an oral cavity.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A chewable dissolvable nicotine tablet comprising:
 a solid solution including
 soluble fibers; 
 sugar alcohols; and 
 a first amount of nicotine; and 
   a plurality of oil domains dispersed in the solid solution, at least one of the plurality of oil domains including a second amount of nicotine,   the tablet including less than 0.5 weight percent of tobacco plant tissue by weight of the tablet, the tablet taking up to 1 hour to dissolve when placed in an adult consumer's oral cavity.   
     
     
         2 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet includes greater than or equal to 20 weight percent to less than or equal to 70 weight percent of the soluble fibers by weight of the tablet. 
     
     
         3 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein an average fiber length of the soluble fibers is greater than or equal to 25 micrometers to less than or equal to 125 micrometers. 
     
     
         4 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the soluble fibers include maltodextrin, psyllium, pectin, guar gum, gum arabic, inulin, arabinoxylans, cellulose, resistant starch, resistant dextrins, lignin, pectins, beta-glucans, oligosaccharides, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         5 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet includes greater than or equal to 20 weight percent to less than or equal to about 75 weight percent of the sugar alcohols by weight of the tablet. 
     
     
         6 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the sugar alcohols include sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, erythritol, maltitol syrup, hydrogenated starch hydrolysates, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         7 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet includes greater than or equal to 0.1 milligrams to less than or equal to 20 milligrams of nicotine by weight of the tablet. 
     
     
         8 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet includes greater than or equal to 2 weight percent to less than or equal to 15 weight percent of oil by weight of the tablet. 
     
     
         9 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the oil has a melting point of less than 37° C. 
     
     
         10 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the plurality of oil domains include hydrogenated oil, palm kernel oil, coconut oil, corn oil, cotton seed oil, olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, rapeseed oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, mustard oil, almond oil, beech nut oil, cashew oil, hazelnut oil, macadamia oil, pecan oil, pine nut oil, pistachio oil, walnut oil, grapefruit seed oil, lemon oil, orange oil, pumpkin oil, watermelon seed oil, citrus oils, oils from melons and gourd seeds, flaxseed oil, cocoa butter, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         11 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet further includes greater than or equal to 0.01 weight percent to less than or equal to 5 weight percent of an antioxidant by weight by weight of the tablet. 
     
     
         12 . The tablet of  claim 11 , wherein the antioxidant includes ascorbyl palmitate, ascorbic acid, sodium ascorbate, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         13 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet further includes monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         14 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet further includes greater than 0 weight percent to less than or equal to 20 weight percent of a flavorant, the flavorant including wintergreen, cherry, berry, Dramboui, bourbon, scotch, whiskey, spearmint, peppermint, lavender, cinnamon, cardamon, apium graveolents, clove, cascarilla, nutmeg, sandalwood, bergamot, geranium, honey essence, rose oil, vanilla, lemon oil, orange oil, Japanese mint, cassia, caraway, cognac, jasmin, chamomile, menthol, ylang, sage, fennel, pimenta, ginger, anise, chai, coriander, coffee, liquorish, mint, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         15 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet further includes greater than 0 weight percent to less than or equal to 10 weight percent of a filler. 
     
     
         16 . The tablet of  claim 15 , wherein the filler includes starch, di-calcium phosphate, lactose, sorbitol, mannitol, and microcrystalline cellulose, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, clays, silica, sodium lauryl sulfate, glyceryl palmitostearate, sodium benzoate, sodium stearyl fumarate, talc, stearates, glycerol monostearate, propylene glycol monostearate, acetylated monoglycerides, ascorbic acid, monosterol citrate, sodium starch glycolate, cross caramellose, cross linked polyvinylpyrrolidone, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         17 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet further includes greater than or equal to 0.05 weight percent to less than or equal to 10 weight percent of a plasticizer. 
     
     
         18 . The tablet of  claim 17 , wherein the plasticizer includes propylene glycol, triacetin, glycerin, vegetable oil, medium chain triglycerides, phthalates, esters of polycarboxylic acids with linear or branched aliphatic alcohols, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         19 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet further comprises:
 a coating on the tablet, the coating including carnuba wax, beeswax, gelatin, acetylated monoglyceride, native potato starch, high amylose starch, hydroxypropylated potato starch, zein, shellac, ethyl cellulose, methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, or any combination thereof.   
     
     
         20 . The tablet of  claim 1 , wherein the tablet takes between 1 minute and 30 minutes to dissolve when chewed by the adult consumer.
