Abstract

A hand vacuum cleaner with a finger grip area that is provided between a forward side of the handle and a rear side of the main body, and wherein the suction motor is positioned between the cyclone and the finger grip area and an axis that extends between the front of the cyclone and the handle extends through the suction motor.

         21 . A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end, a rear end, an upper end, and a lower end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:
 (a) an air flow path extending from an inlet conduit provided at the front end of the hand vacuum cleaner to a clean air outlet, the inlet conduit having an inlet conduit axis;   (b) an air treatment member positioned in the air flow path, the air treatment member having an air treatment member air inlet and an air treatment member air outlet;   (c) a main body housing a suction motor, the suction motor positioned in the air flow path downstream of the air treatment member;   (d) a handle provided at the rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner the handle has a first end, a second end and a hand grip portion extending between the first and second ends;   (e) an energy storage member provided at the second end of the handle; and,   (f) a controller operable to control the suction motor provided at the first end of the hand vacuum cleaner,   wherein a finger gap is provided between a forward side of the hand grip portion of the handle and a rearward side of the main body and,   wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis extending horizontally and the hand vacuum cleaner is in use to clean a surface, the first end of the handle is an upper end of the handle, which is located at the upper end of the hand vacuum cleaner, and the second end of the handle is a lower end of the handle.   
     
     
         22 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 21  wherein the suction motor is positioned rearward of the air treatment member and forward of the finger gap. 
     
     
         23 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 21  wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis extending horizontally and the controller above the energy storage member, the hand grip portion of the handle extends generally vertically. 
     
     
         24 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 21  wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the controller above the energy storage member, the air treatment member has a lower openable portion. 
     
     
         25 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 21  wherein the handle has a handle axis that extends from the lower end of the handle, through the hand grip portion and the upper end of the handle and the handle axis extends through the controller. 
     
     
         26 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 25  wherein the handle axis extends through the energy storage member. 
     
     
         27 . A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end, a rear end, an upper end, and a lower end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:
 (a) an air flow path extending from an inlet conduit provided at the front end of the hand vacuum cleaner to a clean air outlet, the inlet conduit having an inlet conduit axis;   (b) an air treatment member positioned in the air flow path, the air treatment member having an air treatment member air inlet and an air treatment member air outlet;   (c) a main body housing a suction motor, the suction motor positioned in the air flow path downstream of the air treatment member;   (d) a pistol grip handle provided rearward of the air treatment member, the handle having a first end, a second end and a hand grip portion extending between the first and second ends;   (e) an energy storage member provided the second end of the handle; and   (f) a controller wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis extending horizontally and the controller above the energy storage member, the controller faces upwardly.   
     
     
         28 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 27 , wherein the suction motor is positioned rearward of the air treatment member and forward of a finger gap. 
     
     
         29 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 27  wherein the handle has a handle axis that extends from a lower end of the handle, through the hand grip portion and an upper end of the handle and the handle axis extends through the controller. 
     
     
         30 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 29  wherein the handle axis extends through the energy storage member. 
     
     
         31 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 27  further comprising an information display device. 
     
     
         32 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 27  wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the controller above the energy storage member, the air treatment member has a lower openable portion. 
     
     
         33 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 27  wherein the handle is provided at a rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner. 
     
     
         34 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 27  wherein the controller is provided at the first end of the handle. 
     
     
         35 . A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end, a rear end, an upper end, and a lower end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:
 (a) an air flow path extending from an inlet conduit provided the front end of the hand vacuum cleaner to a clean air outlet, the inlet conduit having an inlet conduit axis;   (b) an air treatment member positioned in the air flow path;   (c) a main body housing a suction motor, the suction motor positioned in the air flow path downstream of the air treatment member;   (d) a handle having a hand grip portion;   (e) an energy storage member; and,   (f) a controller operable to control the suction motor;   wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the energy storage member at a lower end of the hand vacuum cleaner and the inlet conduit axis extending horizontally, the controller is above the hand grip portion.   
     
     
         36 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 35  wherein the handle has a handle axis that extends from a lower end of the handle, through the hand grip portion and an upper end of the handle and the handle axis extends through the controller. 
     
     
         37 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 36  wherein the handle axis extends through the energy storage member. 
     
     
         38 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 35  further comprising an information display device. 
     
     
         39 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 35  wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the controller above the energy storage member, the air treatment member has a lower openable portion.
