Abstract
A razor blade with a sharpened cutting edge with an outer bonding surface. A non-fluorinated organic coating material deposited on the outer bonding surface forming an outermost layer of the sharpened cutting edge. The non-fluorinated organic coating is composed of one or more self-assembled monolayers.

1 . A razor blade comprising a sharpened cutting edge with an outer bonding surface and a non-fluorinated organic coating material deposited on the outer bonding surface forming an outermost layer of the sharpened cutting edge, wherein the non-fluorinated organic coating is composed of one or more self-assembled monolayers.
2 . The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the non-fluorinated organic coating comprises an organosilane derived from a compound having a hydrolysable group.
3 . The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the non-fluorinated organic coating comprises an organosilane derived from a compound selected from the group consisting of: a chlorosilane, an alkoxysilane, a hydroxysilane, and a hydrosilane.
4 . The razor blade of claim 3 , wherein the alkoxysilane is selected from the group consisting of: a trimethoxysilane, dimethoxysilane, and an ethoxysilane.
5 . The razor blade of claim 3 , wherein the organosilane comprises one or more alkyl side chains, wherein the one or more alkyl side chains have saturated carbon-carbon bonds.
6 . The razor blade of claim 5 , wherein the alkyl side chains consist of the formula CH 3 (CH 2 ) n wherein n=0-18.
7 . The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the non-fluorinated organic coating comprises an organosilane derived from one of a bis(trimethylsilyl)amine or a hexamethyldisiloxane.
8 . The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the non-fluorinated organic coating comprises an organosilane derived from a chlorosilane consisting of one, two, or three chlorine atoms.

The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the non-fluorinated organic coating comprises an organosilane derived from a chlorosilane selected from the group consisting of: methyltrichlorosilane, dimethyldichlorosilane, t-butyltrichlorosilane, 3,3-dimethylbutyltrichlorosilane, dodecyltrichlorosilane, and mixtures thereof.

The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the sharpened cutting edge comprises a metal, an alloy, or a ceramic, wherein the metal, alloy or ceramic comprises one or more of: chromium, platinum, boron, titanium, vanadium, aluminum, silicon, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, hafnium, tantalum, tungsten, zirconium, molybdenum, or niobium; including carbides, oxides, nitrides, and oxynitrides thereof.
11 . The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the non-fluorinated organic coating material has a surface energy of less than 33 dynes/cm.
12 . The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the non-fluorinated organic coating material forms a layer that is less than 100 Angstroms thick.
13 . The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the one or more self-assembled monolayers comprises a first self-assembled monolayer adhered to the outer bonding layer and to a second self-assembled monolayer.
14 . The razor blade of claim 14 , wherein the second self-assembled monolayer is bonded directly to the first self-assembled monolayer and directly to the outer bonding surface.
15 . The razor blade of claim 1 , further comprising at least one additional layer of material disposed between the sharpened cutting edge and the non-fluorinated organic coating material, wherein at least one additional layer of material comprises one or more of: (i) diamond, amorphous diamond, or diamond-like-carbon (DLC); or (ii) chromium, platinum, boron, chromium diboride, titanium, titanium diboride, vanadium, aluminum, silicon, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, copper, hafnium, tantalum, tungsten, zirconium, molybdenum, or niobium, and oxides, nitrides, and oxynitrides thereof.
16 . The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein sharpened cutting edge comprises a substrate with an interlayer bonded to the substrate.
17 . The razor blade of claim 16 , further the outer bonding surface comprises a hard coating layer bonded to the interlayer.
18 . The razor blade of claim 1 , where non-fluorinated organic coating material is a selected from a group consisting of: silanes, carboxylates, catechols, amines, alkynes, and alkenes.
19 . The razor blade of claim 1 , wherein the non-fluorinated organic coating material forms a layer that is less than 500 Angstroms thick.
