Abstract

In a method, performed by a server, for presenting content on a user device during load latency, a content item for presentation on the user device is selected. The content item and intervening content are transmitted to the user device. The intervening content includes a static version of a landing page associated with the content item. A request to load the landing page is received from the user device. The request is initiated by selection of the content item on the user device. The transmitting occurs before receiving any request to load the landing page from the user device.

We claim: 
     
         1 . A method, performed by a server, for presenting content on a user device during load latency, the method comprising:
 selecting a content item for presentation on the user device;   transmitting the content item and intervening content to the user device, the intervening content including a static version of a landing page associated with the content item; and   receiving, from the user device, a request to load the landing page, the request being initiated by selection of the content item on the user device,   wherein the transmitting occurs before receiving any request to load the landing page from the user device.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 before the selecting, receiving an earlier request from the user device,   wherein the selecting is in response to receiving the earlier request.   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , further comprising:
 after receiving the earlier request and before the selecting, detecting network information.   
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the detecting includes determining a connection speed associated with the user device. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the detecting includes determining a network type associated with the user device. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the detecting includes estimating a network load. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 selecting the intervening content from among a plurality of intervening content.   
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein the selecting the intervening content includes ranking the plurality of intervening content. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein the selecting the intervening content is based on locale information associated with the user device. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 7 , further comprising:
 before the selecting the content item, receiving an earlier request from the user device,   wherein the selecting the content item is in response to receiving the earlier request, and   wherein the selecting the intervening content is based on the earlier request.   
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 in response to receiving the request to load the landing page, loading the landing page onto the user device.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the loading the landing page occurs while the user device displays the intervening content. 
     
     
         13 . A server comprising:
 one or more processors; and   one or more memory devices storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the server to:
 select a content item for presentation on a user device; 
 transmit the content item and intervening content to the user device, the intervening content including a static version of a landing page associated with the content item; and 
 receive, from the user device, a request to load the landing page, the request being initiated by selection of the content item on the user device, 
 wherein the transmitting occurs before receiving any request to load the landing page from the user device. 
   
     
     
         14 . The server of  claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the server to:
 before the selecting, receive an earlier request from the user device,   wherein the selecting is in response to receiving the earlier request.   
     
     
         15 . The server of  claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause the server to:
 after receiving the earlier request and before the selecting, detect network information.   
     
     
         16 . The server of  claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the server to:
 select the intervening content from among a plurality of intervening content.   
     
     
         17 . The server of  claim 16 , wherein the selecting the intervening content includes ranking the plurality of intervening content. 
     
     
         18 . The server of  claim 16 , wherein the selecting the intervening content is based on locale information associated with the user device. 
     
     
         19 . The server of  claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the server to:
 in response to receiving the request to load the landing page, load the landing page onto the user device.   
     
     
         20 . The server of  claim 19 , wherein the loading the landing page occurs while the user device displays the intervening content.
