Abstract
A method for managing an application's resource stack is disclosed. The method includes identifying, by a storage system, a root cause of an anomaly predicted at the external component that affects a performance of the storage system based on a relationship between metrics of the storage system and metrics of a component external to the storage system; and reconfiguring the external component based on the identified root cause.

1 . A method implemented by a storage system comprising a processor and a memory device, the method comprising:
based on a relationship between metrics of the storage system and metrics of a component external to the storage system, identifying, by the storage system, a root cause of an anomaly predicted at the external component that affects a performance of the storage system; and reconfiguring the external component based on the identified root cause.
2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising predicting that the anomaly will occur.

The method of claim 1 wherein identifying, by the storage system, the root cause of the anomaly further comprises retrieving one or more upstack performance metrics from one or more elements in an application stack that is external to the storage system, the one or more elements including the external component.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the external component includes a network link between the storage system and an external execution environment.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the relationship includes a relationship between average write latency at the storage system and network bandwidth for the network link.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the external component includes a virtual machine that is processing a workload.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the external component metrics include virtual machine write bandwidth.
8 . An apparatus comprising a computer processor, a computer memory operatively coupled to the computer processor, the computer memory having disposed within it computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the apparatus to carry out the steps of:
based on a relationship between metrics of a storage system and metrics of a component external to the storage system, identifying, by the storage system, a root cause of an anomaly predicted at the external component that affects a performance of the storage system; and reconfiguring the external component based on the identified root cause.
9 . The apparatus of claim 8 further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the apparatus to carry out the step of predicting that the anomaly will occur.

The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the computer program instructions for identifying, by the storage system, the root cause of the anomaly further comprise computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the apparatus to carry out the step of retrieving one or more upstack performance metrics from one or more elements in an application stack that is external to the storage system, the one or more elements including the external component.
11 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the external component includes a network link between the storage system and an external execution environment.
12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the relationship includes a relationship between average write latency at the storage system and network bandwidth for the network link.
13 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the external component includes a virtual machine that is processing a workload.
14 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the external component metrics include virtual machine write bandwidth.
15 . A computer program product disposed upon a computer readable medium, the computer program product comprising computer program instructions that, when executed, cause a computer to carry out the steps of:
based on a relationship between metrics of a storage system and metrics of a component external to the storage system, identifying, by the storage system, a root cause of an anomaly predicted at the external component that affects a performance of the storage system; and reconfiguring the external component based on the identified root cause.
16 . The computer program product of claim 15 further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed, cause the computer to carry out the step of predicting that the storage system performance anomaly will occur.

The computer program product of claim 15 wherein the computer program instructions for identifying, by the storage system, the root cause of the anomaly further comprise computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer, cause the computer to carry out the step of retrieving one or more upstack performance metrics from one or more elements in an application stack that is external to the storage system, the one or more elements including the external component.
18 . The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the external component includes a network link between the storage system and an external execution environment.
19 . The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein the relationship includes a relationship between average write latency at the storage system and network bandwidth for the network link.
