Abstract

A method of selecting and presenting content based on learned user preferences is provided. The method includes providing a content system including a set of content items organized by genre characterizing the content items, and wherein the set of content items contains microgenre metadata further characterizing the content items. The method also includes receiving search input from the user for identifying desired content items and, in response, presenting a subset of content items to the user. The method further includes receiving content item selection actions from the user and analyzing the microgenre metadata within the selected content items to learn the preferred microgenres of the user. The method includes, in response to receiving subsequent user search input, selecting and presenting content items in an order that portrays as relatively more relevant those content items containing microgenre metadata that more closely match the learned microgenre preferences of the user.

Claims

         23 . A method comprising:
 generating a first signature of a first user based on media asset consumption history of the first user; generating a second signature of a second user based on media asset consumption history of the second user; determining that a current time matches a predicted time when the first user and the second user are likely to consume a media asset together; and in response to the determining that the current time matches the predicted time when the first user and the second user are likely to consume a media asset together, generating for display a recommended media asset identifier, wherein the recommended media asset identifier is identified based on the first signature of the first user and the second signature of the second user.

         24 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising:
 generating a third signature based on the collective media asset consumption history of a plurality of users comprising the first user and the second user, wherein the identifying of the recommended media asset identifier is performed based on the third signature.

         25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of users further comprises a third user, and the third signature is generated based on the collective media consumption history of the first user, the second user and the third user.

         26 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein:
 the first signature is a first vector representing one or more of channels, genres and microgenres associated with the media asset consumption history of the first user; the second signature is a second vector representing one or more of channels, genres and microgenres associated with the media asset consumption history of the second user; and the third signature is a third vector generated by combining the first vector and the second vector.

         27 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein:
 the predicted time is determined by:
 identifying a first time when a media asset having characteristics matching characteristics associated with the third signature is available;
 determining that the first time corresponds to a time when the first user and the second user are likely to consume content; and
 identifying the first time as the predicted time.

         28 . The method of  claim 23 , wherein:
 the recommended media asset identifier is generated for display at a computing device, and each of the first user and the second user is in a vicinity of the computing device.

         29 . The method of  claim 28 , wherein:
 the first time corresponds to a time of day on a particular day of the week; and the second time corresponds to the same time of day on a different day of the week.

         30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein each of the first media asset and the second media asset is part of a same episodic series.

         31 . The method of claim 23 , wherein the first user and the second user are included in a plurality of users, and the plurality of users are users of a same household or users that use a same media account to consume media assets.

         32 . The method of claim 23 , wherein the first signature is generated based on media asset consumption history of the first user at particular time slots on particular days of the week, and the second signature is based on media asset consumption history of the second user at particular time slots on particular days of the week.

         33 . A system comprising:
 control circuitry configured to:
 generate the first signature of the first user based on media asset consumption history of the first user;
 generate the second signature of the second user based on media asset consumption history of the second user; and
 determine that a current time matches a predicted time when the first user and the second user are likely to consume a media asset together; and
   display circuitry configured to:
 in response to the determining that the current time matches the predicted time when the first user and the second user are likely to consume a media asset together, generate for display a recommended media asset identifier, wherein the recommended media asset identifier is identified based on the first signature of the first user and the second signature of the second user.
