Claims

Abstract

A method for automatically creating a short message and a portable terminal using the same includes extracting at least one word expected to be input from a database provided in the portable terminal when a message creation menu is selected. At least one input expected word that has been extracted is then displayed. At least one word that is recognized is selected from among the displayed at least one input expected word; and inputting the selected word to a text message creation window. A user can create a short message without having to input words one-by-one through a keyboard.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A portable terminal, comprising:
 a transceiver;
 memory storing a database including therein a plurality of text content; 
   to a touch screen display; and   a processor, configured to:   receive a message from an external device using the transceiver,   determine at least one predictive text, by analyzing a sentence included in the received message, wherein the at least one predictive text is generated based on at least the plurality of text contents stored in the database,   display the determined at least one predictive text on the touch screen display, and   receive a selection of the at least one predictive text so as to generate a reply message, and transmit the generated reply message to the external device using the transceiver.   
     
     
         2 . The portable terminal of  claim 1 , wherein the plurality of text content includes a plurality of words, and
 wherein the database includes a mapping of at least some of the text content to one or more words included in the received message, respectively.   
     
     
         3 . The portable terminal of  claim 2 , wherein the processor is configured to:
 identify at least one word included in the sentence of the received message, and   retrieve at least one text content mapped to the identified at least one word from the database,   wherein the at least one predictive text is based on the retrieved at least one text content.   
     
     
         4 . The portable terminal of  claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to:
 display a reply button with the at least one predictive text on the touch screen display, and   in response to detecting a user input selecting the reply button, display a text input field and a predictive text field in separate regions on the touch screen display.   
     
     
         5 . The portable terminal of  claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to:
 based on detecting a user input corresponding to a complete reply message, transmit the complete reply message including the at least one predictive text to the external device.   
     
     
         6 . The portable terminal of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one predictive text includes a phrase having multiple words. 
     
     
         7 . The portable terminal of  claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to:
 display the determined at least one predictive text with the received message.   
     
     
         8 . A method of a portable terminal, comprising:
 receiving a message from an external device using a transceiver;   determining, by at least one processor, at least one predictive text by analyzing a sentence included in the received message, wherein the at least one predictive text is generated based on at least a plurality of text contents stored in a database;   displaying the determined at least one predictive text on a touch screen display; and   receive a selection of the at least one predictive text so as to generate a reply message, and transmit the generated reply message to the external device using the transceiver.   
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the plurality of text content includes a plurality of words, and
 wherein the database includes a mapping of at least some of the text content to one or more words included in the received message.   
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein determining the at least one predictive text further comprises:
 identifying at least one word included in the sentence of the received message; and   retrieving at least one text content mapped to the identified at least one word from the database,   wherein the at least one predictive text is based on the retrieved at least one text content.   
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising:
 displaying a reply button with the at least one predictive text on the touch screen display, and   in response to detecting a user input selecting the reply button, displaying a text input field and a predictive text field in separate regions on the touch screen display.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein transmitting the reply message comprises:
 based on detecting a user input corresponding to a complete reply message is complete, transmitting the complete reply message including the at least one predictive text to the external device.   
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the at least one predictive text includes a phrase having multiple words. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the determined at least one predictive text is displayed with the received message. 
     
     
         15 . An electronic device, comprising:
 a transceiver;   memory storing a database including therein a plurality of text content, and programming instructions;   a touch screen display; and   at least one processor,   wherein the programming instructions are executable by the at least one processor to cause the electronic device to:   receive, via the touch screen display, a user input request generation of a new message;   display, via the touch screen display, a message generation user interface (UI),   prior to entry of any text into the message generation UI, generate one or more predictive texts based on the plurality of text content, and display the generated one or more predictive text in the message generation UI;   detecting selection of a first predictive text, and displaying a draft message in the message generation UI including the selected first predictive text.   
     
     
         16 . The electronic device of  claim 15 , wherein the message generation UI includes a text entry field for displaying entered text, and a predictive text field. 
     
     
         17 . The electronic device of  claim 16 , wherein prior to the entry of any text into the message generation UI, the one or more predictive texts are displayed in the predictive text field, and the text entry field is empty of text. 
     
     
         18 . The electronic device of  claim 17 , wherein the predictive text field is disposed adjacent to an on-screen keyboard that is selectable to enter text into the text entry field. 
     
     
         19 . The electronic device of  claim 18 , wherein the one or more predictive texts are updated such that at least one entry therein is changed to a new predictive text after detecting either of:
 selection of a predictive text from the predictive text field for insertion into the text entry field; and   input of an entered text into the text entry field by operation of the on-screen keyboard.   
     
     
         20 . The electronic device of  claim 15 , wherein the programming instructions are further executable to cause the electronic device to:
 based on detecting a user input indicating generation of the draft message is complete, transmitting the generated draft message including the selected predictive text to an external device via the transceiver.
