Abstract

Oxidative stress is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, and has been extensively studied as a potential target for therapeutic intervention. The present disclosure discloses a method for reducing free radicals in a mammal, the method comprises administering a composition containing an effective amount of Baillonella toxisperma extract to a mammal to reduce free radicals in the mammal. Specifically, the present disclosure demonstrates how extracts and flavonoids fractions of Baillonella toxisperma provide antioxidant and neuroprotective benefits and prevent oxidative stress in mammals.

         19 . A method of increasing antioxidant capacity in a human in need thereof comprising:
 administering 150 mg-300 mg per day of an extract of  Baillonella toxisperma  to said human in need thereof to effectively treat neurodegenerative diseases in the human in need thereof.   
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is a water extract. 
     
     
         21 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is an ethanol extract. 
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is from the stem or the bark of  Baillonella toxisperma.    
     
     
         23 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is a hydroethanol extract. 
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is a dried powder. 
     
     
         25 . A method of treating cardiovascular diseases in a human in need thereof comprising:
 administering 150 mg-300 mg per day of an extract of  Baillonella toxisperma  to said human in need thereof to effectively treat cardiovascular disease in the human in need thereof.   
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the extract of  Baillonella toxisperma  is a water extract of  Baillonella toxisperma.    
     
     
         27 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the extract of  Baillonella toxisperma  is an ethanol extract of  Baillonella toxisperma.    
     
     
         28 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is from the stem or the bark of  Baillonella toxisperma.    
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is a hydro-ethanol extract. 
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is a dried powder. 
     
     
         31 . A method of reducing free radicals and protecting neurons of a mammal in a human in need thereof comprising:
 administering 150 mg-300 mg per day of an extract of  Baillonella toxisperma  to said human in need thereof to effectively reduce free radicals and protect neurons of a mammal in the human in need thereof.   
     
     
         32 . The method of  claim 31 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  is administered as a water extract of  Baillonella toxisperma.    
     
     
         33 . The method of  claim 31 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  administered is an ethanol extract of  Baillonella toxisperma.    
     
     
         34 . The method of  claim 31 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is from the stem or the bark of  Baillonella toxisperma.    
     
     
         35 . The method of  claim 31 , wherein the  Baillonella toxisperma  extract is a hydro-ethanol extract.
