Abstract

A system is disclosed that provides emergency backup power to a solid-state drive (SSD) that may not contain any internal supercapacitors. The SSD may include a first connector and a hold-up power supply. The first connector may have a predetermined form factor and may being capable of being connected to a corresponding connector of a midplane of a storage system. The first connector may include a main power connection that is connected to a main power supply of the midplane if the first connector is connected to the corresponding connector of the midplane. The hold-up power supply may be internal to the SSD, and may receive hold-up energy from an external energy source for a predetermined amount of time after the first connector has been disconnected from the main power connection of the midplane so that the SSD may store any host data write requests that the SSD has acknowledged.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . An apparatus, comprising:
 a storage device comprising:
a connector comprising a first connection configured to receive power; and
a power supply configured to receive power using a second connection and provide power to the storage device based on a connection status of the first connection.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the power supply is configured to receive the power to store, based on the connection status, state data of the storage device.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the power supply is configured to receive the power to store, based on the connection status, a data write request to persistent storage.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the storage device is configured to store, using the power, based on the connection status, state data of the storage device.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the storage device is configured to store, using the power, based on the connection status, a data write request to persistent storage.

6 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second connection comprises at least one terminal configured to supply the power to the power supply.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the connector is a first connector and the second connection comprises at least one second connector coupled to the power supply.

8 . The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the at least one second connector is configured to receive a third connector.

9 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second connection comprises a wireless connection.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second connection comprises a radio-frequency coupling.

11 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second connection comprises a light link.

12 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the storage device is a first storage device and the second connection is configured to receive power from at least one second storage device.

         13 . A storage system, comprising:
a connector configured to connect to a storage device, wherein the connector comprises a first connection configured to provide first power to the storage device; and a source of second power configured to provide, using a second connection, the second power to the storage device based on a connection status of the first connection with the storage device.

14 . The storage system of claim 13 , wherein the second connection comprises a cable.

15 . The storage system of claim 14 , wherein the connector is a first connector and the cable comprises a second connector configured to connect to the storage device.

16 . The storage device of claim 13 , wherein the storage device is a first storage device and the source of second power comprises a second storage device.

17 . The storage system of claim 13 , wherein the second connection comprises a wireless connection.

18 . The storage system of claim 13 , wherein the second connection comprises a terminal of the connector.

         19 . A method comprising:
receiving, at a storage device, using a first connection of a first connector configured to connect to a storage system, first power; and receiving, at the storage device, by a second connection, based on a connection status of the first connection with the storage device, second power.

20 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising storing, using the second power, based on a connection status of the first connection with the storage device, information at the storage device.
