Devices and methods to use power spectrum or signal association for pain management
Abstract
Methods and systems for electrical stimulation can include obtaining a biosignal of the patient; altering at least one stimulation parameter of an electrical stimulation system in response to the biosignal; and delivering an electrical stimulation current to one or more selected electrodes of the electrical stimulation system using the at least one stimulation parameter. In some embodiments, a power spectrum is determined from the biosignal. In some embodiments, the biosignal is at least two different biosignals measured at the same or different locations on the patient and a coherence, correlation, or association between the two biosignal is determined.

1 . A method for stimulating a patient, the method comprising:
obtaining a biosignal of the patient, wherein the biosignal comprises an electrical signal traversing a spinal cord, a nerve, or a group of nerves; analyzing the biosignal to determine whether the biosignal is indicative of pain; and altering, by the device, at least one stimulation parameter of a stimulation system in response to the biosignal when the biosignal is indicative of pain.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising delivering an electrical stimulation current to one or more selected electrodes of the stimulation system using the at least one altered stimulation parameter.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating the at least one altered stimulation parameter to an implantable control module.
4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a power spectrum from the biosignal, wherein altering the at least one stimulation parameter comprises altering the at least one stimulation parameter of the stimulation system in response to the power spectrum.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein analyzing the biosignal comprises determining that the biosignal is indicative of pain based on a portion of the biosignal in a predetermined frequency range.
6 . The method of claim 4 , wherein analyzing the biosignal comprises determining that the biosignal is indicative of pain based on a frequency shift of a portion of the biosignal to a frequency within a predetermined frequency range.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein obtaining a biosignal comprises obtaining a plurality of biosignals and analyzing the biosignal comprises analyzing the biosignals to determine at least one measure of association, wherein each of the at least one measure of association is determined between at least two of the biosignals.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein at least one of the at least one measure of association comprises a coherence, biocoherence, phase-amplitude coupling, or correlation of at least two of the biosignals.
9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of biosignals comprises at least two biosignals of a same type with each of the at least two biosignals measured at a different location on a body of the patient.
10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of biosignals comprises at least two biosignals measured at a same location on a body of the patient with each of the at least two biosignals being a different type of biosignal.
11 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of biosignals comprises at least two biosignals measured at a same location on a body of the patient with each of the at least two biosignals measured at a different time.
12 . A method for stimulating a patient, the method comprising:
obtaining a plurality of biosignals of the patient; analyzing the biosignals to determine at least one measure of association, wherein each of the at least one measure of association is determined between at least two of the biosignals; and altering, by the device, at least one stimulation parameter of a stimulation system in response to at least one of the at least one measure of association.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein at least one of the at least one measure of association comprises a coherence, biocoherence, phase-amplitude coupling, or correlation between at least two of the biosignals.
14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of biosignals comprises at least two biosignals of a same type with each of the at least two biosignals measured at a different location on a body of the patient.
15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of biosignals comprises at least two biosignals measured at a same location on a body of the patient with each of the at least two biosignals being a different type of biosignal.
16 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of biosignals comprises at least two biosignals measured at a same location on a body of the patient with each of the at least two biosignals measured at a different time.
17 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising delivering an electrical stimulation current to one or more selected electrodes of the stimulation system using the at least one altered stimulation parameter.
18 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising communicating the at least one altered stimulation parameter to an implantable control module.
19 . The method of claim 12 , wherein at least one of the biosignals comprises an electrical signal traversing a spinal cord, a nerve, or a group of nerves.
