Systems and methods for monitoring end tidal carbon monoxide
Abstract
Systems and methods for measurement of end tidal carbon dioxide, including a device having a body and a tubular gas line. The body is adapted to be attached to a patient airway and has a first gas line securing portion which has an aperture through it and is adapted to secure the gas line to the body. The tubular gas line is secured in the aperture. The tubular gas line has a proximal portion extending from a proximal end of the aperture and has a proximal end which is adapted to be connected to an end tidal CO2 monitor. The tubular gas line also has a distal portion extending from a distal end of the aperture and having a distal end which provides an inlet for end tidal CO2 exhaled by a patient.

an oral airway having a tubular portion adapted to be inserted into a patient’s mouth, the tubular portion maintaining an open passageway through the patient’s throat, wherein the patient breathes through the passageway, the oral airway having a flange at a proximal opening of the passageway; a body which is secured to the flange,
wherein the body has a central opening therethrough, the central opening having substantially the same shape as the proximal opening of the passageway of the oral airway, and
wherein the body has a first gas line securing portion adapted to secure a first tubular gas line to the body with a distal portion of the first tubular gas line extending into the central passageway of the oral airway and having a distal end which provides an inlet for end tidal CO2 exhaled by the patient.
2 . The system of claim 1 , the first tubular gas line having a proximal portion extending out of the central passageway of the oral airway and having a proximal end adapted to be connected to an end tidal CO2 monitor.
3 . The system of claim 1 , the first tubular gas line having a proximal portion extending out of the central passageway of the oral airway and having a proximal end adapted to be connected to a first prong of a nasal cannula, the first prong of the cannula providing a first conduit to an end tidal CO2 monitor.
4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the body has a second gas line securing portion adapted to secure a second tubular gas line to the body with a distal portion of the second tubular gas line extending into the central passageway of the oral airway and having a distal end with an outlet for providing O2 to the patient, the second tubular gas line having a proximal portion extending out of the central passageway of the oral airway and having a proximal end adapted to be connected to a second prong of the nasal cannula, the second prong of the cannula providing a second conduit to an O2 source.
5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the central opening of the body is sized to accommodate a medical instrument therethrough.
6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the medical instrument comprises an endoscope.
7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the flange of the oral airway comprises a planar flange, and wherein the body comprises a planar body.
8 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising an adhesive positioned on a distal side of the body, wherein the adhesive secures a distal side of the body to a proximal face of the flange and thereby secures the body to the oral airway.
9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first gas line securing portion of the body is configured to extend into the central opening in the body.
10 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more tabs that are located around a periphery of the body, wherein the one or more tabs extend distally over an edge of the flange of the oral airway, wherein the one or more tabs have corresponding hook portions that are adapted to clip the body onto the flange of the oral airway.
11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the tubular gas line is tapered with respect to an axis of the tubular gas line.
12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the body has a second gas line securing portion adapted to secure a second gas line to the body, the second gas line securing portion adapted to secure a second tubular gas line to the body with a distal portion of the second tubular gas line extending into the central passageway of the oral airway and having a distal end which provides an outlet for O2 to the patient.
13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein at least one of the first and second gas line securing portion has the aperture therethrough formed by two opposing extensions which partially encircle the aperture but do not completely encircle the aperture, thereby enabling gas lines to be snapped into place between the extensions from a position within the central aperture.
14 . An oral airway adapter device comprising:
a body which is adapted to be secured to a flange of an oral airway, wherein the body has a central opening therethrough, the central opening having substantially the same shape as a proximal opening of a passageway of the oral airway; and a first gas line securing portion connected to the body, the first gas line securing portion securing a first tubular gas line to the body with a distal portion of the first tubular gas line extending from the body and a distal end of the first tubular gas line having an inlet for end tidal CO2 exhaled by a patient, wherein the distal portion of the first tubular gas line is adapted to extend into the central passageway of the oral airway.
15 . The device of claim 14 , further comprising a second gas line securing portion connected to the body, the second gas line securing portion securing a second tubular gas line to the body with a distal portion of the second tubular gas line extending from the body and a distal end of the second tubular gas line having an outlet for O2 to be inhaled by a patient, wherein the distal portion of the second tubular gas line is adapted to extend into the central passageway of the oral airway.
16 . The device of claim 14 , the first tubular gas line having a proximal portion extending from the body and having a proximal end adapted to be connected to a first prong of a nasal cannula, the first prong of the cannula providing a first conduit to an end tidal CO2 monitor.

The device of claim 14 , wherein the body has a second gas line securing portion adapted to secure a second tubular gas line to the body with a distal portion of the second tubular gas line extending from the body and a distal end of the second tubular gas line having an outlet for O2 to be inhaled by a patient, wherein the distal portion of the second tubular gas line is adapted to extend into the central passageway of the oral airway, the second tubular gas line having a proximal portion extending from the body and having a proximal end adapted to be connected to a second prong of the nasal cannula, the second prong of the cannula providing a second conduit to an O2 source.
18 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the proximal end of the first tubular gas line opens in a direction parallel to a face of the body and perpendicular to a direction in which the distal portion of the first tubular gas line extends, wherein the first prong of the nasal cannula is parallel to the face of the body when the first prong of the nasal cannula is connected to the proximal end of the first tubular gas line.
19 . The device of claim 18 , further comprising a clip connected to the body, wherein the clip is adapted to hold the nasal cannula in position against the body and to thereby hold the first prong of the nasal cannula in connection with the proximal end of the first tubular gas line.
