Abstract
Described herein are processes for the activation of glass pozzolan as well as the activated product. Methods of using the activated product are also described.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWe claim:
. A method of forming an activated glass pozzolan, the method including:
reacting particles of glass in an activation solution including Group IA, Group IIA, or Group VIIB metal or metal hydroxide to form the activated glass pozzolan, wherein the reacting is at an elevated pH, an elevated temperature, and an elevated pressure.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metal includes sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, or manganese.
. The method of claim 2 , wherein the metal includes calcium.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particles of glass are soda lime glass, bottle glass, plate glass, e-glass, or a combination thereof.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particles of glass are soda lime glass, bottle glass, plate glass, or e-glass.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particles of glass are at least partially recycled.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particles of glass are substantially all recycled.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the activated glass pozzolan is ground to a particle size of between about 1 μm and about 100 μm.
. The method of claim 8 , wherein the ground activated glass pozzolan has an expansion less than portland cement control samples.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elevated temperature is between about 100° C. to about 220° C.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elevated temperature is between about 150° C. to about 220° C.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elevated pH is greater than about 11.
. The method of claim 12 , wherein the elevated pH results from the addition of calcium hydroxide with a lithium salt and/or lithium hydroxide.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising circulating the particles of glass and the activation solution.
. The method of claim 14 , wherein the circulating is at a rate of about 10 RPM to about 500 RPM.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising exposing the activation solution to air.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elevated pressure is a pressure above 1 atm.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resulting activated glass pozzolan consists essentially of particles of activated glass including etched surfaces, microcrystalline calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), and calcium carbonate.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising drying the activated glass pozzolan.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein resulting activated glass pozzolan is added to cement.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
