Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatus include computer programs encoded on a computer-readable storage medium for providing content. A method includes: receiving a first request for filling a slot on a first publisher page, the request including an encrypted publisher cookie; providing content responsive to the request; upon receipt of an indication that a user interacted with the content, creating and providing a content serving system cookie; linking the received encrypted publisher cookie with the content serving system cookie; receiving a second, different request for content in association with rendering a second, different publisher page, the second, different request including an encrypted publisher cookie associated with the second different publisher page and the previously provided content serving system cookie; linking the received encrypted publisher cookie associated with the second, different publisher page with the encrypted publisher cookie associated with the first publisher page; and using the linkings to determine content to deliver.

         2 . A method comprising:
 receiving, by one or more servers in a first domain, (i) a set of interaction data and (ii) encrypted information corresponding to a publisher server that has provided, to a client device, publisher resource in a second domain that differs from the first domain of the one or more servers;   mapping, by one or more servers, the encrypted information to a server cookie that is (i) a first party cookie to the first domain of the one or more servers and (ii) a third party cookie to the second domain of the publisher resource;   receiving, at the one or more servers and from an application that is configured to block third party cookies that are of a different domain than the second domain of the publisher resource while the publisher resource is rendered by the application at a client device, a request for content that is configured to populate the publisher resource rendered in the application at the client device;   serving, by the one or more servers and to the application, content selected using data mapped to the server cookie in response to receipt of the request for content based on the mapping between the server cookie and the encrypted information even though the server cookie is a third party cookie to the second domain of the publisher resource, wherein the serving of the content causes presentation of the content while the publisher resource is presented by the application that is configured to block the third party cookies.   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the encrypted information is one way encrypted such that underlying information obtained during user visits to the publisher resource is not discoverable from the encrypted information. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 2 , further comprising dropping the server cookie on the client device in response to receiving a navigation request at the one or more servers. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4 , wherein:
 the navigation request includes data specifying an interaction with content provided, by the one or more servers, to the publisher resource; and   mapping the encrypted information to the server cookie comprises creating an entry in a data structure linking the interaction with content, the server cookie, and the encrypted information.   
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 5 , further comprising:
 receiving a different request that includes the server cookie and a publisher cookie generated as a first party cookie to a different publisher resource;   mapping the publisher cookie to the encrypted information based on the mapping between the encrypted information and the server cookie that was previously created; and   selecting different content configured to populate the different publisher resource based on a combination of information collected by the one or more servers using each of the encrypted information, the server cookie, and the publisher cookie based on the mapping between the publisher cookie, the encrypted information, and the server cookie; and   providing the selected different content to a device that submitted the different request.   
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , further comprising inserting, by the one or more servers, a script into the different content in response to receiving the different request and based on the mapping wherein the script causes the publisher cookie to be transmitted to the one or more servers in response to interaction with the content at the different publisher resource. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 7 , further comprising:
 receiving a different navigation request that was generated by the script and includes the publisher cookie, wherein the different navigation request includes interaction data specifying a user interaction with the different content;   mapping the different interaction to the encrypted information, the publisher cookie, and the server cookie in response to receiving the different navigation request, and based on the mapping between the encrypted information, the publisher cookie, and the server cookie.   
     
     
         9 . A system comprising:
 one or more servers in a first domain; and   one or more memory elements including instructions that when executed cause the one or more servers to perform operations comprising:
 receiving (i) a set of interaction data and (ii) encrypted information corresponding to a publisher server that has provided, to a client device, publisher resource in a second domain that differs from the first domain of the one or more servers; 
 mapping the encrypted information to a server cookie that is (i) a first party cookie to the first domain of the one or more servers and (ii) a third party cookie to the second domain of the publisher resource; 
 receiving, from an application that is configured to block third party cookies that are of a different domain than the second domain of the publisher resource while the publisher resource is rendered by the application at a client device, a request for content that is configured to populate the publisher resource rendered in the application at the client device; 
 serving, to the application, content selected using data mapped to the server cookie in response to receipt of the request for content based on the mapping between the server cookie and the encrypted information even though the server cookie is a third party cookie to the second domain of the publisher resource, wherein the serving of the content causes presentation of the content while the publisher resource is presented by the application that is configured to block the third party cookies. 
   
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the encrypted information is one way encrypted such that underlying information obtained during user visits to the publisher resource is not discoverable from the encrypted information. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more servers to perform operations further comprising dropping the server cookie on the client device in response to receiving a navigation request at the one or more servers. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 11 , wherein:
 the navigation request includes data specifying an interaction with content provided, by the one or more servers, to the publisher resource; and   mapping the encrypted information to the server cookie comprises creating an entry in a data structure linking the interaction with content, the server cookie, and the encrypted information.   
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 12 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more servers to perform operations further comprising:
 receiving a different request that includes the server cookie and a publisher cookie generated as a first party cookie to a different publisher resource;   mapping the publisher cookie to the encrypted information based on the mapping between the encrypted information and the server cookie that was previously created; and   selecting different content configured to populate the different publisher resource based on a combination of information collected by the one or more servers using each of the encrypted information, the server cookie, and the publisher cookie based on the mapping between the publisher cookie, the encrypted information, and the server cookie; and   providing the selected different content to a device that submitted the different request.   
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more servers to perform operations further comprising inserting, by the one or more servers, a script into the different content in response to receiving the different request and based on the mapping wherein the script causes the publisher cookie to be transmitted to the one or more servers in response to interaction with the content at the different publisher resource. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 14 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more servers to perform operations further comprising:
 receiving a different navigation request that was generated by the script and includes the publisher cookie, wherein the different navigation request includes interaction data specifying a user interaction with the different content;   mapping the different interaction to the encrypted information, the publisher cookie, and the server cookie in response to receiving the different navigation request, and based on the mapping between the encrypted information, the publisher cookie, and the server cookie.   
     
     
         16 . A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that when executed cause one or more servers in a first domain to perform operations comprising:
 receiving (i) a set of interaction data and (ii) encrypted information corresponding to a publisher server that has provided, to a client device, publisher resource in a second domain that differs from the first domain of the one or more servers;   mapping the encrypted information to a server cookie that is (i) a first party cookie to the first domain of the one or more servers and (ii) a third party cookie to the second domain of the publisher resource;   receiving, from an application that is configured to block third party cookies that are of a different domain than the second domain of the publisher resource while the publisher resource is rendered by the application at a client device, a request for content that is configured to populate the publisher resource rendered in the application at the client device;   serving, to the application, content selected using data mapped to the server cookie in response to receipt of the request for content based on the mapping between the server cookie and the encrypted information even though the server cookie is a third party cookie to the second domain of the publisher resource, wherein the serving of the content causes presentation of the content while the publisher resource is presented by the application that is configured to block the third party cookies.   
     
     
         17 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 16 , wherein the encrypted information is one way encrypted such that underlying information obtained during user visits to the publisher resource is not discoverable from the encrypted information. 
     
     
         18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 16 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more servers to perform operations further comprising dropping the server cookie on the client device in response to receiving a navigation request at the one or more servers. 
     
     
         19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 18 , wherein:
 the navigation request includes data specifying an interaction with content provided, by the one or more servers, to the publisher resource; and   mapping the encrypted information to the server cookie comprises creating an entry in a data structure linking the interaction with content, the server cookie, and the encrypted information.   
     
     
         20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 19 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more servers to perform operations further comprising:
 receiving a different request that includes the server cookie and a publisher cookie generated as a first party cookie to a different publisher resource;   mapping the publisher cookie to the encrypted information based on the mapping between the encrypted information and the server cookie that was previously created; and   selecting different content configured to populate the different publisher resource based on a combination of information collected by the one or more servers using each of the encrypted information, the server cookie, and the publisher cookie based on the mapping between the publisher cookie, the encrypted information, and the server cookie; and   providing the selected different content to a device that submitted the different request.   
     
     
         21 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 20 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more servers to perform operations further comprising inserting, by the one or more servers, a script into the different content in response to receiving the different request and based on the mapping wherein the script causes the publisher cookie to be transmitted to the one or more servers in response to interaction with the content at the different publisher resource.
