Abstract

A device with a display receives a first communication at the device while the device is in a locked state. In response to receiving the first communication at the device while the device is in the locked state, the device generates, for display in a respective user interface, a first notification for the first communication received at the device, wherein the first notification includes content in the first communication. While displaying the first notification in the respective user interface, the device receives information that indicates a sender of the first communication is preparing another communication. In response to receiving the information that indicates the sender of the first communication is preparing another communication, the device updates the displayed first notification in the respective user interface to concurrently display content in the first communication and a communication-preparation indicator that indicates preparation of another communication by the sender of the first communication.

Claims

 in response to receiving the first communication at the device while the device is in the locked state, generating, for display in a respective user interface, a first notification for the first communication received at the device, wherein the first notification includes content in the first communication;
 while displaying the first notification in the respective user interface, receiving information that indicates a sender of the first communication is preparing another communication; and
 in response to receiving the information that indicates the sender of the first communication is preparing another communication, updating the displayed first notification in the respective user interface to concurrently display content in the first communication and a communication-preparation indicator that indicates preparation of another communication by the sender of the first communication.

         2 . The method of  claim 1 , comprising:
 while displaying the updated first notification that concurrently includes content in the first communication and the communication-preparation indicator that indicates preparation of another communication by the sender of the first communication, receiving a second communication from the sender of the first communication; and in response to receiving the second communication, updating the displayed first notification in the respective user interface to:
 concurrently display content in the first communication and content in the second communication, and
 cease to display the communication-preparation indicator.

         3 . The method of  claim 2 , comprising:
 in response to receiving the second communication at the device, concurrently displaying content from the first and second communications in accordance with a determination that the second communication and the first communication are received from the same sender.

         4 . The method of  claim 2 , comprising:
 after receiving the second communication, receiving a user input to activate the device from a dormant state; and, in response to receiving the user input to activate the device from the dormant state, concurrently displaying content from the first and second communications in accordance with a determination that the second communication and the first communication are received from the same sender.

         5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the first communication and the second communication are instant messages.

         6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein, in accordance with a determination that the second communication and the first communication are from the same sender, further updating the first notification to sequentially display a message body from the first communication and a message body from the second communication.

         7 . The method of  claim 1 , comprising:
 receiving an input directed to the updated first notification; and, in response to receiving the input directed to the updated first notification, generating, for display in the respective user interface, an alternative version of the updated first notification, wherein the alternative version of the updated first notification includes:
 a first set of action controls for content in the updated first notification that corresponds to the first communication.

         8 . The method of  claim 1 , comprising:
 while the device is in the locked state, receiving an input directed to the updated first notification; and in response to receiving the input directed to the updated first notification while the device is in the locked state, generating a third notification, for concurrent display with the first notification.

         9 . The method of  claim 1 , comprising:
 receiving an input directed to the updated first notification; and in response to receiving the input directed to the updated first notification, activating an application associated with the first communication, the application displaying the first communication in context with a previous communication session with the same user.

         10 . The method of  claim 1 , comprising:
 receiving a dismissal input directed to the updated first notification; and in response to receiving the dismissal input directed to the updated first notification, updating a read/unread status of the first communication in accordance with the dismissal input.

         11 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the first notification displays a timestamp with a receipt time of the first communication, and the method includes:
 updating the timestamp to display a receipt time of the second communication.

         12 . The method of  claim 11 , comprising:
 at a first time after receiving the first communication and prior to receiving the second communication, displaying the first notification and a third notification in accordance with a first display order; and at a second time after receiving the second communication, displaying the first notification and the third notification in accordance with a second display order that is different from the first display order, wherein the second display order is generated based on the updated timestamp in the updated first notification.

         13 . An electronic device, comprising:
 a display; one or more processors; memory; and one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:
 receiving a first communication at the device while the device is in a locked state;
 in response to receiving the first communication at the device while the device is in the locked state, generating, for display in a respective user interface, a first notification for the first communication received at the device, wherein the first notification includes content in the first communication;
 while displaying the first notification in the respective user interface, receiving information that indicates a sender of the first communication is preparing another communication; and
 in response to receiving the information that indicates the sender of the first communication is preparing another communication, updating the displayed first notification in the respective user interface to concurrently display content in the first communication and a communication-preparation indicator that indicates preparation of another communication by the sender of the first communication.
