Embedded authentication systems in an electronic device
Abstract
This invention is directed to an electronic device with an embedded authentication system for restricting access to device resources. The authentication system may include one or more sensors operative to detect biometric information of a user. The sensors may be positioned in the device such that the sensors may detect appropriate biometric information as the user operates the device, without requiring the user to perform a step for providing the biometric information (e.g., embedding a fingerprint sensor in an input mechanism instead of providing a fingerprint sensor in a separate part of the device housing). In some embodiments, the authentication system may be operative to detect a visual or temporal pattern of inputs to authenticate a user. In response to authenticating, a user may access restricted files, applications (e.g., applications purchased by the user), or settings (e.g., application settings such as contacts or saved game profile).

2 . An electronic device, comprising:
one or more processors; and memory storing one or more programs configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:
during an enrollment process for enrolling one or more eye features of a user for biometric authentication, detecting movement of eyes of the user;
while detecting the movement of the eyes of the user, capturing authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user;
after capturing the authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user, detecting a request to unlock the electronic device; and
in response to detecting the request to unlock the electronic device:
in accordance with a determination that information about an eye associated with the request to unlock the electronic device corresponds to the authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user, transitioning the electronic device from a lock state to an unlock state.
3 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:
in accordance with a determination that the information about the eye associated with the request to unlock the electronic device does not correspond to the authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user, maintaining the electronic device in the lock state.
4 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more eye features of the user include retina information.
5 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more eye features of the user include iris information.
6 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the movement of the eyes of the user includes eye movement that is determined by the user.
7 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user includes one or more images of the eyes of the user.
8 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user includes depth information about the eyes of the user.
9 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the enrollment process includes capturing information about one or more facial features of the user.
10 . The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the one or more facial features of the user includes information about one or more portions of a face of the user positioned proximate to the eyes of the user.
11 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:
during the enrollment process, capturing one or more facial features of the of the user for the biometric authentication; in response to detecting the request to unlock the electronic device:
in accordance with a determination that the information about the eye associated with the request to unlock the electronic device corresponds to the authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user and in accordance with a determination that information about a face associated with the request to unlock the electronic device corresponds to the one or more facial features of the user, transitioning the electronic device from the lock state to the unlock state.
12 . The electronic device of claim 11 , wherein the one or more facial features of the user includes information about one or more portions of a face of the user positioned proximate to the eyes of the user.
13 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:
in response to detecting the request to unlock the electronic device:
in accordance with a determination that a set of one or more criteria is met, prompting the user to input a passcode that, when authenticated by the electronic device, enables the electronic device to provide access to one or more features of the electronic device.
14 . A method comprising:
at an electronic device:
during an enrollment process for enrolling one or more eye features of a user for biometric authentication, detecting movement of eyes of the user;
while detecting the movement of the eyes of the user, capturing authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user;
after capturing the authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user, detecting a request to unlock the electronic device; and
in response to detecting the request to unlock the electronic device:
in accordance with a determination that information about an eye associated with the request to unlock the electronic device corresponds to the authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user, transitioning the electronic device from a lock state to an unlock state.
15 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs configured to be executed by one or more processors of an electronic device, the one or more programs including instructions for:
during an enrollment process for enrolling one or more eye features of a user for biometric authentication, detecting movement of eyes of the user; while detecting the movement of the eyes of the user, capturing authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user; after capturing the authentication information associated with the one or more eye features of the user, detecting a request to unlock the electronic device; and in response to detecting the request to unlock the electronic device:
