Abstract
The purpose of this invention is to provide a method with which it is easy to perform screening for an agent that proliferates or an agent that minimizes the reduction in MCSP-positive basal epidermal stem cells. Provided is a screening method for a laminin 511 expression promoter, which takes the expression of laminin 511 as an indicator. Also provided is an agent for improving skin barrier function, elasticity, hydration and inflammation, said agent including at least one extract selected from among a group consisting of brown algae, red algae and green algae.

A method for inhibiting an activity of an extracellular matrix degrading enzyme, comprising administering 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-imidazolidinone to a subject in need thereof, wherein said administering inhibits the activity of the extracellular matrix degrading enzyme in the subject.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the extracellular matrix degrading enzyme comprises a matrix metalloproteinase.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the extracellular matrix degrading enzyme comprises matrix metalloproteinase 9.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the extracellular matrix degrading enzyme comprises heparanase.
5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the extracellular matrix degrading enzyme further comprises heparanase.
6 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the extracellular matrix degrading enzyme further comprises heparanase.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said administering inhibits laminin 511 degradation in the subject.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein said administering inhibits reduction of the number of epidermal stem cells in the subject.
9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein said administering promotes proliferation of epidermal stem cells in the subject.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said administering inhibits reduction of the number of epidermal stem cells in the subject.
11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said administering promotes proliferation of epidermal stem cells in the subject.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said administering stabilizes an epidermal basal membrane in the subject.
