Pharmaceutical composition comprising a combination of probiotic and prebiotic to treat stunting

Abstract

The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition including a probiotic and a prebiotic for treatment of stunting in children. More particularly, the pharmaceutical composition includes at least one Lactobacillus specie(s) as a probiotic and at least one oligosaccharide as a prebiotic. The present invention further provides a method of treatment of stunting including administering an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition including a probiotic and a prebiotic to children in need thereof.

         21 . A method for enhancing gut health of a child or infant, comprising administering to a child or infant an effective amount of a composition comprising  Lactobacillus plantarum  strain ATCC202195. 
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the composition further comprises an effective amount of a prebiotic. 
     
     
         23 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the composition further comprises one or more excipients selected from fillers, adsorbents, binders, disintegrants, lubricants, glidants, release-modifying excipients, super-disintegrants, and antioxidants. 
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the effective amount of  Lactobacillus plantarum  strain ATCC202195 is 1-5 billion counts of cells. 
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the effective amount of prebiotic is 100-500 mg. 
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the prebiotic comprises at least one oligosaccharide. 
     
     
         27 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the prebiotic is a fructo-oligosaccharide. 
     
     
         28 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the child or infant is from 0 to 59 months of age.

         30 . A method for promoting gut maturation of a child or infant, comprising administering to a child or infant an effective amount of a composition comprising  Lactobacillus plantarum  strain ATCC202195. 
     
     
         31 . The method of  claim 30 , wherein the composition further comprises an effective amount of a prebiotic. 
     
     
         32 . The method of  claim 30 , wherein the composition further comprises one or more excipients selected from fillers, adsorbents, binders, disintegrants, lubricants, glidants, release-modifying excipients, super-disintegrants, and antioxidants. 
     
     
         33 . The method of  claim 30 , wherein the effective amount of  Lactobacillus plantarum  strain ATCC202195 is 1-5 billion counts of cells.
