Abstract

Exemplary electronic apparatus include an electrical device configured to attach to and to provide direct current (DC) power to a connector of a cable assembly. The cable assembly includes a first conductor configured to receive the DC power from the electrical device. The cable assembly also includes a second conductor, and the second conductor includes a ground conductor. The cable assembly also includes one or more other conductors and circuitry configured to receive a first signal from the electrical device. At least one of the one or more other conductors, in response to the first signal, is configured to send a second signal to the electrical device.

What is claimed are: 
     
         1 . An electronic apparatus comprising:
 an electrical device configured to attach to and to provide direct current (DC) power to a connector of a cable assembly, the cable assembly comprising:
 a first conductor configured to receive the DC power from the electrical device; 
 a second conductor, the second conductor comprising a ground conductor; 
 one or more other conductors; and 
 circuitry configured to receive a first signal from the electrical device, and 
 wherein at least one of the one or more other conductors, in response to the first signal, is configured to send a second signal to the electrical device, the second signal corresponding to a particular power supply mode. 
   
     
     
         2 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the second signal is a current signal. 
     
     
         3 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the second signal is a voltage signal. 
     
     
         4 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the second signal provides information related to a power level. 
     
     
         5 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the second signal provides information related to a current level. 
     
     
         6 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the second signal provides information related to a voltage level. 
     
     
         7 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the second signal provides current, voltage, resistance, or power information. 
     
     
         8 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 7 , wherein the second signal corresponds to one of a plurality of designated power supply modes. 
     
     
         9 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the cable assembly is configured to attach to a portable electronic device that includes a battery. 
     
     
         10 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the cable assembly further comprises comparison circuitry. 
     
     
         11 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 10 , wherein the comparison circuitry is responsive to the first signal. 
     
     
         12 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein the comparison circuitry is configured to compare the first signal to a reference. 
     
     
         13 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 7 , wherein the second signal comprises a current signal. 
     
     
         14 . The electronic apparatus of  claim 7 , wherein the second signal comprises a voltage signal. 
     
     
         15 . An apparatus comprising:
 an electronic device that includes an electrical interface configured to deliver power to a cable assembly, the cable assembly comprising:
 a first conductor configured to receive power; 
 a second conductor, the second conductor comprising a ground conductor; 
 one or more other conductors; and 
 circuitry configured to receive a first signal from the electronic device, and 
 wherein at least one of the one or more other conductors, in response to the first signal, is configured to send a second signal to the electronic device, the second signal corresponding to a particular power supply mode. 
   
     
     
         16 . The apparatus of  claim 15 , wherein the electronic device is responsive to the second signal and is configured to deliver power according to the particular power supply mode. 
     
     
         17 . The apparatus of  claim 15 , wherein the cable assembly include a cable, a first electrical connector, and a second electrical connector. 
     
     
         18 . The apparatus of  claim 17 , wherein the second electrical connector is configured to attach to a portable electronic device that includes a battery. 
     
     
         19 . The apparatus of  claim 17 , wherein the first electrical connector is configured to attach to the electronic device. 
     
     
         20 . A packaged product comprising:
 an electronic device; and   a cable assembly, the cable assembly comprising:
 a first conductor configured to receive power from the electronic device; 
 a second conductor, said second conductor being a ground conductor; 
 one or more other conductors; and 
 circuitry configured to receive a first signal from the electronic device, and 
 wherein at least one of the one or more other conductors, in response to the first signal, is configured to send a second signal to the electronic device, the second signal related to a particular power delivery mode. 
   
     
     
         21 . The packaged product of  claim 20 , wherein the cable assembly further comprises comparison circuitry. 
     
     
         22 . The packaged product of  claim 20 , wherein the second signal provides information related to an electrical characteristic. 
     
     
         23 . The packaged product of  claim 20 , wherein the electronic device is configured to deliver direct current power to the first conductor of the cable assembly. 
     
     
         24 . A packaged product comprising:
 an electronic device configured to receive power from an external power source and having an electrical interface;   a cable assembly, the cable assembly comprising:   an electrical connector coupled to a cable, the electrical connector including:
 a first conductor configured to receive power from the electrical interface of the electronic device; 
 a second conductor, the second conductor being a ground conductor; 
 a third conductor; and 
 circuitry configured to receive a first signal from the electrical interface, and 
 wherein the third conductor, in response to the first signal, is configured to send a second signal to the electrical interface, the second signal providing current, voltage, resistance, or power information. 
   
     
     
         25 . The packaged product of  claim 24 , wherein the second signal relates to a particular power supply mode. 
     
     
         26 . The packaged product of  claim 24 , wherein the electrical connector is configured to attach to the electrical interface of the electronic device. 
     
     
         27 . The packaged product of  claim 24 , wherein the electronic device comprises a power output. 
     
     
         28 . The packaged product of  claim 24 , wherein the electronic device comprises direct current power supply circuitry.
