Abstract

A method includes receiving a plurality of requests from a user endpoint device associated with a first internet protocol address, where the user endpoint device is associated with a subscriber of the internet service provider network, and where each request of the plurality of requests comprises a request for a respective internet protocol address associated with a respective uniform resource locator of a respective internet content provider, extracting a pattern from the plurality of requests, using a machine learning technique, generating a network cookie that encodes the pattern, and delivering the network cookie to the user endpoint device for installation on the user endpoint device.

         21 . A method comprising:
 sending, by a processor of a user endpoint device, a plurality of requests associated with a first internet protocol address to a domain name system resolver of an internet service provider network, where the user endpoint device is associated with a subscriber of the internet service provider network, and where each request of the plurality of requests comprises a request for a respective internet protocol address associated with a respective uniform resource locator of a respective internet content provider;   receiving, by the processor of the user endpoint device, from the internet service provider network a network cookie, wherein the network cookie is generated by the internet service provider network; and   installing, by the processor of the user endpoint device, the network cookie on the user endpoint device.   
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the network cookie is generated by the domain name system resolver of the internet service provider network, and wherein the network cookie encodes a pattern extracted from the plurality of requests. 
     
     
         23 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the pattern is extracted from the plurality of requests using a machine learning technique. 
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the network cookie is used to map a change of the first internet protocol address to a second internet protocol address. 
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 21 , further comprising:
 sending, by the processor of the user endpoint device subsequent to the installing, a first request to the domain name system resolver of the internet service provider network, wherein the first request includes the network cookie.   
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the first request is separate from the plurality of requests and comprises a request for a first content provider internet protocol address associated with a first uniform resource locator of a first internet content provider. 
     
     
         27 . The method of  claim 26 , wherein the network cookie allows the domain name system resolver subsequent to receiving the first request, to modify content associated with the first uniform resource locator, based on data contained in the network cookie, to generate customized content. 
     
     
         28 . The method of  claim 27 , further comprising:
 receiving, by the processor of the user endpoint device, the customized content from the internet service provider network.   
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 26 , wherein the domain name system resolver forwards the network cookie to the first internet content provider. 
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 29 , wherein the domain name system resolver determines, prior to the forwarding of the network cookie to the first internet content provider, that the first internet content provider is a trusted internet content provider by consulting a list of trusted internet content providers in order to determine that the first internet content provider is on the list. 
     
     
         31 . The method of  claim 30 , wherein the list is vetted by a party other than the subscriber, an operator of the internet service provider network, and the first internet content provider. 
     
     
         32 . The method of  claim 30 , wherein the list is based at least in part on contents of an industry database. 
     
     
         33 . The method of  claim 30 , wherein the list is based at least in part on domain reputations of the trusted internet content providers. 
     
     
         34 . The method of  claim 26 , wherein the first internet protocol address is a public internet protocol address that is replaced with a private internet protocol address on the user endpoint device. 
     
     
         35 . The method of  claim 34 , wherein the public internet protocol address is shared among a plurality of subscriber networks connected to the internet service provider network in accordance with carrier grade network address translation. 
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the network cookie further encodes information about the subscriber that is stored in a profile for the subscriber that is maintained by an operator of the internet service provider network. 
     
     
         37 . The method of  claim 36 , wherein the information about the subscriber comprises at least one of: a name of the subscriber, an identifier of the subscriber, an address of the subscriber, a mobile device number associated with the subscriber, a location of the subscriber, or demographic information of the subscriber. 
     
     
         38 . The method of  claim 37 , wherein the profile for the subscriber further defines, for each internet content provider of a defined plurality of internet content providers, a respective subset of the information about the subscriber that is allowed to be shared. 
     
     
         39 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by a processor of a user endpoint device, cause the processor to perform operations, the operations comprising:
 sending a plurality of requests associated with a first internet protocol address to a domain name system resolver of an internet service provider network, where the user endpoint device is associated with a subscriber of the internet service provider network, and where each request of the plurality of requests comprises a request for a respective internet protocol address associated with a respective uniform resource locator of a respective internet content provider;   receiving from the internet service provider network a network cookie, wherein the network cookie is generated by the internet service provider network; and   installing the network cookie on the user endpoint device.   
     
     
         40 . A device comprising:
 a processing system of a user endpoint device; and   a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by the processing system, cause the processing system to perform operations, the operations comprising:
 sending a plurality of requests associated with a first internet protocol address to a domain name system resolver of an internet service provider network, where the user endpoint device is associated with a subscriber of the internet service provider network, and where each request of the plurality of requests comprises a request for a respective internet protocol address associated with a respective uniform resource locator of a respective internet content provider; 
 receiving from the internet service provider network a network cookie, wherein the network cookie is generated by the internet service provider network; and 
 installing the network cookie on the user endpoint device.
