Using social connections to define graphical representations of users in an artificial reality setting
Abstract
Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable media are disclosed for variably rendering graphical representations of co-users in VR environments based on social graph information between the co-users and a VR user. For example, the disclosed systems can identify a co-user within a VR environment. Furthermore, the disclosed systems can determine a social relevancy (e.g., a social relationship type) between the co-user and a VR user within the VR environment based on social graph information. Then, the disclosed systems can select and/or determine a graphical representation and/or other capabilities of the co-user within the VR environment based on the social relevancy. Additionally, the disclosed systems can display the co-user within the VR environment using the determined graphical representation type (e.g., from the perspective of the VR user).

1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
identifying a person within a field of view of an augmented reality device of a user, wherein the person is a co-user of the user within a communications system; determining a social relationship type for the co-user based on social graph information between the user and the co-user; and causing the augmented reality device to display an augmented reality element specific to the social relationship type for the co-user positioned about the person within the field of view.
2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the social relationship type for the co-user utilizing social connections between the user and co-user from the social graph information, wherein the social relationship type comprises at least one of a family member type, a close friend type, a casual friend type, an acquaintance type, a stranger type, or a restricted type.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting the augmented reality element specific to the social relationship type for the co-user by selecting at least one of an information type specific to the social relationship type for the co-user for text information within the augmented reality element, an augmented reality color element, or an augmented reality highlight element around the person within the field of view, wherein the information type comprises at least one of a name of the co-user, mutual friends between the co-user and the user within the communications system, an occupation of the co-user, the social relationship type between the co-user and the user, or event information for the co-user.
4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the augmented reality element comprises:
a first augmented reality element type having a first level of information detail about the co-user; or a second augmented reality element type having a second level of information detail about the co-user different than the first level of information detail.
5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:
identifying an additional person within the field of view of the augmented reality device of the user, wherein the additional person is an additional co-user of the user within the communications system; determining an additional social relationship type for the additional co-user based on social graph information between the user and the additional co-user, wherein the social relationship type for the co-user is different than the additional social relationship type for the additional co-user; and causing the augmented reality device to display an additional augmented reality element specific to the additional social relationship type for the additional co-user positioned about the additional person within the field of view.
6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , further comprising:
causing the augmented reality device to display the augmented reality element to indicate a name of the co-user positioned about the person within the field of view; and causing the augmented reality device to display the additional augmented reality element to indicate an additional name of the additional co-user and mutual friends between the additional co-user and the user positioned about the additional person within the field of view.
7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the co-user within the communications system by utilizing facial recognition on the person within the field of view of the augmented reality device of the user.
8 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a computing device to:
identify a person within a field of view of an augmented reality device of a user, wherein the person is a co-user of the user within a communications system; determine a social relationship type for the co-user based on social graph information between the user and the co-user; and cause the augmented reality device to display an augmented reality element specific to the social relationship type for the co-user positioned about the person within the field of view.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , further storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to determine the social relationship type for the co-user utilizing social connections between the user and co-user from the social graph information, wherein the social relationship type comprises at least one of a family member type, a close friend type, a casual friend type, an acquaintance type, a stranger type, or a restricted type.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , further storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to select an information type specific to the social relationship type for the co-user for text information within the augmented reality element, wherein the information type comprises at least one of a name of the co-user, mutual friends between the co-user and the user within the communications system, an occupation of the co-user, the social relationship type between the co-user and the user, or event information for the co-user.
11 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the augmented reality element comprises:
a first augmented reality element type having a first level of information detail about the co-user; or a second augmented reality element type having a second level of information detail about the co-user different than the first level of information detail.
12 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , further storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:
identify an additional person within the field of view of the augmented reality device of the user, wherein the additional person is an additional co-user of the user within the communications system; and cause the augmented reality device to display an additional augmented reality element specific to an additional social relationship type between the user and the additional co-user, wherein the additional augmented reality element is positioned about the additional person within the field of view.
13 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , further storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:
cause the augmented reality device to display the augmented reality element to indicate a name of the co-user positioned about the person within the field of view; and cause the augmented reality device to display the additional augmented reality element to indicate no relationship between the additional co-user and the user positioned about the additional person within the field of view.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , further storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to receive, from the user, configuration settings that associate one or more information types for augmented reality elements to one or more social relationship types.
15 . A system comprising:
at least one processor; and at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:
identify a person within a field of view of an augmented reality device of a user, wherein the person is a co-user of the user within a communications system;
determine a social relationship type for the co-user based on social graph information between the user and the co-user; and
cause the augmented reality device to display an augmented reality element specific to the social relationship type for the co-user positioned about the person within the field of view.
16 . The system of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:
determine the social relationship type for the co-user utilizing social connections between the user and co-user from the social graph information, wherein the social relationship type comprises at least one of a family member type, a close friend type, a casual friend type, an acquaintance type, a stranger type, or a restricted type; and select the augmented reality element specific to the social relationship type for the co-user by selecting at least one of an information type specific to the social relationship type for the co-user for text information within the augmented reality element, an augmented reality color element, or an augmented reality highlight element around the person within the field of view, wherein the information type comprises at least one of a name of the co-user, mutual friends between the co-user and the user within the communications system, an occupation of the co-user, the social relationship type between the co-user and the user, or event information for the co-user.
17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the augmented reality element comprises:
a first augmented reality element type having a first level of information detail about the co-user; or a second augmented reality element type having a second level of information detail about the co-user different than the first level of information detail.
18 . The system of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:
identify an additional person within the field of view of the augmented reality device of the user, wherein the additional person is an additional co-user of the user within the communications system; determine an additional social relationship type for the additional co-user based on social graph information between the user and the additional co-user, wherein the social relationship type for the co-user is different than the additional social relationship type for the additional co-user; select an additional augmented reality element specific to the additional social relationship type for the additional co-user; and cause the augmented reality device to display the additional augmented reality element positioned about the additional person within the field of view.
19 . The system of claim 18 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:
cause the augmented reality device to display the augmented reality element to indicate a name of the co-user positioned about the person within the field of view; and cause the augmented reality device to display the additional augmented reality element to indicate an additional name of the additional co-user and mutual friends between the additional co-user and the user positioned about the additional person within the field of view.
