Abstract

A combined receipt and label roll comprises a core, and a web having a longitudinally-extending axis and wound on the core along the axis. The web includes (i) a substrate having a front side and a back side opposite the front side, (ii) a thermally-sensitive coating disposed on the front side of the substrate, and (iii) a water-based microsphere adhesive disposed on the back side of the substrate along the web axis. The water-based microsphere adhesive comprises at least four separate adhesive patches. The at least four adhesive patches are both sized relative to each other and positioned relative to each other on the back side of the substrate such that additional tack desired can be obtained by increasing volume of the adhesive patches without having to increase coat weight of the adhesive patches.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . (canceled)

         2 . A label, comprising:
a substrate; and adhesive patches disposed on a backside of the substrate; wherein each patch is sized as a multiple of a given smallest patch size; wherein each adhesive patch is sized relative to each other and positioned relative to each other on the backside; wherein a desired tack is obtained by increasing a given size of a given adhesive patch by a given multiple of the given smallest patch size without increasing a coat weight of any of the adhesive patches; wherein a desired peel force associated with the desired tack for the adhesive patches is obtained by arranging the adhesive patches in a given pattern on the backside.

3 . The label of claim 2 , wherein the adhesive patches comprise a water-based microsphere adhesive.

4 . The label of claim 2 , wherein the adhesive patches comprise four separate adhesive patches.

5 . The label of claim 4 , wherein the given pattern of the at least four separate adhesive patches covers at least a portion of each of four quadrants on the backside of the substrate.

6 . The label of claim 2 , wherein the multiple includes 1.8 times larger than the given smallest patch size, 3.6 times larger than the given smallest patch size, equal to the given smallest patch size, or 2 times larger than the given smallest patch size.

7 . The label of claim 2 , wherein the given smallest patch size is a base value of 1.

8 . The label of claim 2 , wherein the given pattern is selected from 10 redefined patterns.

9 . The label of claim 8 , wherein each of the 10 predefined patterns are associated with a predefined number of the adhesive patches.

10 . The label of claim 2 further comprising sense marks are disposed on the backside of the substrate between the adhesive patches.

11 . The label of claim 2 , wherein the adhesive patches comprise 7 adhesive patches.

12 . The label of claim 2 , wherein the adhesive patches comprise 4 to 10 adhesive patches.

         13 . A label, comprising:
a substrate; and adhesive patches on a backside of the substrate; wherein each adhesive patch is sized as a multiple of a given base adhesive patch size and relative to one another to obtain a desired tack without changing a coat weight of an adhesive used in the adhesive patches; wherein the adhesive patches are arranged on the backside in a given pattern from a plurality of available patterns to obtain a desired peel force associated with the desired tack.

14 . The label of claim 13 further comprising a thermally-sensitive coating disposed on a front side of the substrate.

15 . The label of claim 14 further comprising a release coating disposed over at least a portion of the thermally-sensitive coating of the front side.

16 . The label of claim 13 further comprising, sense marks disposed between the adhesive patches on the backside of the substrate.

17 . The label of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of available patterns comprise 10 predefined patterns.

18 . The label of claim 13 , wherein a total number of the adhesive patches is at least four adhesive patches.

         19 . The a of claim 13 , wherein the adhesive is a water-based microsphere adhesive.

         20 . A method, comprising:
calculating, by a processor, adhesive patch sizes for adhesive pa les as multiples of a given base adhesive patch size; selecting, by the processor, a pattern for the adhesive patches to achieve a desired. tack and peel force based on the calculated adhesive patch sizes and the selected pattern using a given coat weight for an adhesive of the adhesive patches; and depositing the adhesive patches in the calculated adhesive patch sizes and in the select pattern on a backside of a substrate for a label.

21 . The method of claim 20 further comprising, depositing a thermally-sensitive coating on a front side of the substrate.
