Abstract

The subject matter disclosed herein includes distributed systems for secure storage and retrieval of encrypted biological specimen data. According to one embodiment, the system may include a submission device client operable to send, to a patient record server device, a patient record; and receive, from the patient record server device, a confirmation of receipt of the patient record. The system may further comprise a patient record server device comprising a first processor and second memory, a second communications interface associated with the first processor and second memory and operable to receive, from the submission device client, the patient record; send, to the submission device client, the confirmation of receipt of the patient record; receive, from a member device client, patient profile information; determine search results based on the patient profile information; and send, to the member device client, information indicating the search results. They system may yet further comprise a member device client operable to send, to the patient record server device, the patient profile information; receive, from the patient record server device, the information indicating the search results based on the patient profile information; and receive the search results based on the information indicating the search results.

1 . A system for secure storage and retrieval of encrypted biological specimen data comprising:
 a processor; and   a nonvolatile memory communicatively coupled to the processor, the nonvolatile memory comprising computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform a method comprising:
 creating a patient blockchain that is empty at a start of a clinical trial, the patient blockchain corresponding to a patient for the clinical trial; 
 updating the patient blockchain during the clinical trial; 
 broadcasting availability of a physical specimen sample and of the patient blockchain as updated during the clinical trial to network members at a conclusion of the clinical trial; 
 receiving a permission for a transfer of the physical specimen sample to a third party; and 
 updating the patient blockchain with a record of third party access to the physical specimen sample and of the permission for the transfer of the physical specimen sample. 
   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises at least one of:
 storing a patient record provider credit to update the patient blockchain;   storing a member device client debit to update the patient blockchain; or   storing an operator credit to update the patient blockchain.   
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:
 receiving patient record information from a member device client;   storing the patient record information to update the patient blockchain; and   updating a stored access fee associated with the patient blockchain in response to storing the patient record information.   
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises storing the patient blockchain in a secure peer-to-peer network of computers. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises storing the patient blockchain in an individual wallet or biobank associated with the patient. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the patient blockchain is configured so that at least one block can include data associated with multiple transactions. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the patient blockchain comprises, at least at the conclusion of the clinical trial, a specimen identifier, informed consent data, a medical record, and results. 
     
     
         8 . A method comprising:
 creating a patient blockchain that is empty at a start of a clinical trial, the patient blockchain corresponding to a patient for the clinical trial;   updating the patient blockchain during the clinical trial;   broadcasting availability of a physical specimen sample and of the patient blockchain as updated during the clinical trial to network members at a conclusion of the clinical trial;   receiving a permission for a transfer of the physical specimen sample to a third party; and   updating the patient blockchain with a record of third party access to the physical specimen sample and of the permission for the transfer of the physical specimen sample.   
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8  further comprising:
 storing a patient record provider credit to update the patient blockchain; 
 confirming the patient record provider credit to a member device client; 
 storing a member device client debit to update the patient blockchain; 
 confirming the member device client debit to the member device client; and 
 storing an operator credit to update the patient blockchain. 
 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 8  further comprising:
 receiving patient record information from a member device client; 
 storing the patient record information to update the patient blockchain; and 
 updating a stored access fee associated with the patient blockchain in response to storing the patient record information. 
 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 8  further comprising storing the patient blockchain in a secure peer-to-peer network of computers. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 8  further comprising storing the patient blockchain in an individual wallet or biobank associated with the patient. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein at least one block of the patient blockchain comprises data associated with multiple transactions. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the patient blockchain comprises, at least at the conclusion of the clinical trial, a specimen identifier, informed consent data, a medical record, and results. 
     
     
         15 . A nonvolatile memory comprising computer-readable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:
 create a patient blockchain that is empty at a start of a clinical trial, the patient blockchain corresponding to a patient for the clinical trial;   update the patient blockchain during the clinical trial;   broadcast availability of a physical specimen sample and of the patient blockchain as updated during the clinical trial to network members at a conclusion of the clinical trial;   receive a permission for a transfer of the physical specimen sample to a third party; and   update the patient blockchain with a record of third party access to the physical specimen sample and of the permission for the transfer of the physical specimen sample.   
     
     
         16 . The nonvolatile memory of  claim 15 , wherein the computer-readable instructions further cause the processor to:
 store a patient record provider credit to update the patient blockchain;   store a member device client debit to update the patient blockchain; and   store an operator credit to update the patient blockchain.   
     
     
         17 . The nonvolatile memory of  claim 15 , wherein the computer-readable instructions further cause the processor to:
 receive patient record information from a member device client;   store the patient record information to update the patient blockchain; and   update a stored access fee associated with the patient blockchain in response to storing the patient record information.   
     
     
         18 . The nonvolatile memory of  claim 15 , wherein the computer-readable instructions further cause the processor to store the patient blockchain in a secure peer-to-peer network of computers. 
     
     
         19 . The nonvolatile memory of  claim 18 , wherein the computer-readable instructions further cause the processor to store the patient blockchain in an individual wallet or biobank associated with the patient. 
     
     
         20 . The nonvolatile memory of  claim 15 , wherein at least one block of the patient blockchain comprises data associated with multiple transactions.
