Golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads

Abstract

Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head includes a body portion with an interior cavity, a face portion, a first port, and a second port connected to the interior cavity. The second port includes first and second openings, a second-port first portion, and a second-port second portion. The second-port first portion extends from the first opening to the second opening, and the second-port second portion extends from the second opening to the interior cavity. A portion of the interior cavity below a horizontal midplane of the body portion and between the second port and a heel portion edge of the body portion is closer to an outer surface of the back wall portion than the second opening of the second port. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A golf club head comprising:
 a body portion made from a material having a first density, the body portion including an interior cavity, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a heel portion edge, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, and a sole portion with a sole portion edge, the back wall portion comprising:
 an upper back wall portion extending from the top portion edge toward the sole portion edge to a location below a horizontal midplane of the body portion, 
 a lower back wall portion extending from the sole portion edge toward the top portion edge, and 
 a ledge portion below the horizontal midplane of the body portion and extending in a rearward direction from the upper back wall portion to the lower back wall portion; 
   a face portion coupled to the front portion;   a mass portion comprising a material having a second density greater than the first density;   a first port having an opening on the lower back wall portion and extending from the opening toward the face portion; and   a second port connected to the interior cavity, the second port having a first opening, a second opening between the first opening and the face portion, a second-port first portion, and a second-port second portion, the second-port first portion extending from the first opening to the second opening, and the second-port second portion extending from the second opening to the interior cavity,   wherein the first port and the second-port first portion are configured to interchangeably receive the mass portion,   wherein a distance between the first port and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the second port and the toe portion edge, and   wherein a portion of the interior cavity below the horizontal midplane and between the second port and the heel portion edge is closer to an outer surface of the back wall portion than the second opening of the second port.   
     
     
         2 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 1 , wherein an internal diameter of the second-port first portion is greater than an internal diameter of the second-port second portion. 
     
     
         3 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 1 , wherein a minimum outer diameter of the mass portion is less than a maximum inner diameter of the second-port second portion. 
     
     
         4 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 1 , wherein the second port is a closest port to the heel portion edge. 
     
     
         5 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 1 , wherein an end portion of the mass portion forms an uncovered external surface of the back wall portion that is visible to an individual viewing the back wall portion. 
     
     
         6 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 1 , wherein a distance between a portion of the ledge portion at or proximate to the upper back wall portion and the horizontal midplane is less than a distance between a portion of the ledge portion at or proximate to the lower back wall portion and the horizontal midplane. 
     
     
         7 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 1 , wherein a width of the ledge portion increases in a direction from the heel portion edge to the toe portion edge. 
     
     
         8 . A golf club head comprising:
 a body portion made from a material having a first density, the body portion including a hosel portion, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, and a sole portion with a sole portion edge, the back wall portion comprising:
 an upper back wall portion extending from the top portion edge toward the sole portion edge, 
 a lower back wall portion extending from the sole portion edge toward the top portion edge, and 
 a ledge portion extending in a rearward direction from the upper back wall portion to the lower back wall portion; 
   a first port on the lower back wall portion;   a second port on the lower back wall portion, a distance between the second port and the hosel portion being less than a distance between the first port and the hosel portion; and   an interior cavity in the body portion comprising:
 a first interior cavity portion located below the ledge portion, the first interior cavity portion having a first cavity width extending between the first port and the front portion or the second port and the front portion, and 
 a second interior cavity portion located below the ledge portion and between the second port and the hosel portion, the second interior cavity portion having a second cavity width extending between the back wall portion and the front portion, 
   wherein the second cavity width is greater than the first cavity width, and   wherein a portion of the second cavity width extends between the first cavity width and the back wall portion.   
     
     
         9 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 8 , wherein the interior cavity is at least partially filled with a polymer material. 
     
     
         10 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 8 , wherein the first port or the second port is connected to the interior cavity, and wherein a polymer material is injected into the interior cavity from the first port or from the second port. 
     
     
         11 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 8 , wherein the first port comprises a first end portion on the back wall portion defining a port opening and a second end portion opposite the first end portion, the second end portion being closer to the front portion than the first end portion, wherein a portion of the interior cavity above the first port and below the ledge portion of the body portion extends aft of the second end portion. 
     
     
         12 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 8 , wherein the second port comprises a first end portion on the back wall portion defining a port opening and a second end portion opposite the first end portion, the second end portion being closer to the front portion than the first end portion, wherein a portion of the interior cavity above the second port and below the ledge portion extends aft of the second end portion. 
     
     
         13 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 8 , wherein a width of the ledge portion is greater than a width of the body portion above the ledge portion. 
     
     
         14 . A golf club head comprising:
 a body portion made from a material having a first density, the body portion including an interior cavity, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a heel portion edge, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, and a sole portion with a sole portion edge, the back wall portion comprising:
 an upper back wall portion extending from the top portion edge toward the sole portion edge to a location below a horizontal midplane of the body portion, 
 a lower back wall portion extending from the sole portion edge toward the top portion edge, and 
 a ledge portion below the horizontal midplane of the body portion and extending in a rearward direction from the upper back wall portion to the lower back wall portion; 
   a face portion coupled to the front portion to enclose the interior cavity;   a first mass portion comprising a material having a second density different from the first density, the first mass portion removably coupled to the lower back wall portion, the first mass portion having a first end portion defining a portion of an outer surface of the lower back wall portion and a second end portion opposite the first end portion;   a second mass portion comprising a material having a third density different from the first density, the second mass portion removably coupled to the lower back wall portion, the second mass portion having a first end portion defining a portion of an outer surface of the lower back wall portion and a second end portion opposite the first end portion;   a port having an opening on the lower back wall portion and extending from the opening toward the front portion; and   wherein a distance between the first mass portion and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the second mass portion and the toe portion edge,   wherein a distance between the second mass portion and the heel portion edge is less than a distance between the first mass portion and the heel portion edge,   wherein a distance between the port and the heel portion edge is less than a distance between the second mass portion and the heel portion edge,   wherein the interior cavity comprises a heel-side cavity portion below the horizontal midplane between the port and the heel portion edge,   wherein a distance between the back wall portion and the heel-side cavity portion is less than a distance between the back wall portion and the second end portion of the first mass portion, and   wherein a distance between an outer surface of the back wall portion and the heel-side cavity portion is less than a distance between the outer surface of the back wall portion and the second end portion of the second mass portion.   
     
     
         15 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 14 , wherein the second density is greater than the first density. 
     
     
         16 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 14 , wherein the third density is greater than the first density. 
     
     
         17 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 14 , wherein the port has a first portion with a first internal diameter and a second portion with a second internal diameter less than the first internal diameter. 
     
     
         18 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 14 , wherein the port is connected to the interior cavity, and wherein the interior cavity is filled with a polymer material from the port. 
     
     
         19 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 14 , wherein a width of the ledge portion increases in a direction from the heel portion edge to the toe portion edge. 
     
     
         20 . A golf club head as defined in  claim 14 , wherein a width of the ledge portion is greater than or equal to twice a width of the interior cavity above the horizontal midplane.
