Systems and methods for managing releases of global services in a controlled manner

Abstract

Described herein are systems and methods for managing releases of global services in a controlled manner. A computing environment may include a first release of a global service, a second release of the global service, and a manager service. The first and second release may be enabled and disabled. The first release may be enabled and the second release may be disabled. The second release may be ready for use in the computing environment after passing one or more checks. A manager service may enable use of the second release in the computing environment. The manager service may disable use of (but maintain execution of) the first release in the computing environment. The second release may be determined to have one or more issues. Responsive to determining the second release has issue(s), the manager service may disable use of the second release and re-enable use of the first release.

We claim: 
     
         1 . A method comprising:
 maintaining, by one or more processors, a first state of a first release of a service and a second state of a second release of the service in a computing environment, the first release of the service is executing and enabled for processing requests from clients and the second release of the service is executing and disabled from processing requests from clients;   communicating, by the one or more processors, a first disable command to the first release of the service and a first enable command to the second release of the service   determining, by the one or more processors, that the second release of the service is having one or more issues;   updating, by the one or more processor, the first state of the first release of the service to be enabled and the second state of the second release to be disabled responsive to identifying that the second release of the service is having one or more issues, and   communicating, by the one or more processors, a second enable command to the first release of the service to enable the first release of the service to process client requests and a second disable command to the second release of the service to disable the second release of the service from processing client requests.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein each of the first release of the service and the second release of the service are configured to receive enable commands from the one or more processors while disabled from processing client requests. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising communicating, by the one or more processors, one of the first enable command or the first disable command responsive to receiving a poll from one of the first release of the service or the second release of the service. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising communicating, by the one or more processors, one of the second enable command or the second disable command responsive to receiving a poll from one of the first release of the service or the second release of the service. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein requests from clients are directed to one of the first release of the service or the second release of the service that is enabled. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the first release of the service is executed at a first time instance and one of enabled or disabled at a second time instance. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the second release of the service is executed at a first time instance and one of enabled or disabled at a second time instance. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the second release of the service comprises one of updates to the first release of the service to be tested for issues. 
     
     
         9 . A system comprising:
 one or more processors, coupled to memory and configured to:   maintain a first state of a first release of a service and a second state of a second release of the service in a computing environment, the first release of the service is executing and enabled for processing requests from clients and the second release of the service is executing and disabled from processing requests from clients;   communicate a first disable command to the first release of the service and a first enable command to the second release of the service   determine that the second release of the service is having one or more issues;   update the first state of the first release of the service to be enabled and the second state of the second release to be disabled responsive to identifying that the second release of the service is having one or more issues; and   communicate a second enable command to the first release of the service to enable the first release of the service to process client requests and a second disable command to the second release of the service to disable the second release of the service from processing client requests.   
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein each of the first release of the service and the second release of the service are configured to receive enable commands from the one or more processors while disabled from processing client requests. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to communicate one of the first enable command or the first disable command responsive to receiving a poll from one of the first release of the service or the second release of the service. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to communicate one of the second enable command or the second disable command responsive to receiving a poll from one of the first release of the service or the second release of the service. 
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein requests from clients are directed to one of the first release of the service or the second release of the service that is enabled. 
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the first release of the service is executed at a first time instance and one of enabled or disabled at a second time instance. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the second release of the service is executed at a first time instance and one of enabled or disabled at a second time instance. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the second release of the service comprises an update to the first release of the service to be tested for issues. 
     
     
         17 . A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:
 maintain a first state of a first release of a service and a second state of a second release of the service in a computing environment, the first release of the service is executing and enabled for processing requests from clients and the second release of the service is executing and disabled from processing requests from clients;   communicate a first disable command to the first release of the service and a first enable command to the second release of the service   determine that the second release of the service is having one or more issues;   update the first state of the first release of the service to be enabled and the second state of the second release to be disabled responsive to identifying that the second release of the service is having one or more issues; and   communicate a second enable command to the first release of the service to enable the first release of the service to process client requests and a second disable command to the second release of the service to disable the second release of the service from processing client requests.   
     
     
         18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 17 , wherein each of the first release of the service and the second release of the service are configured to receive enable commands from the one or more processors while disabled from processing client requests. 
     
     
         19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 17 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to communicate one of the first enable command or the first disable command responsive to receiving a poll from one of the first release of the service or the second release of the service. 
     
     
         20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 17 , wherein the second release of the service is executed at a first time instance and one of enabled or disabled at a second time instance.
