Closed-System Bladder Drug Administration Catheter and Methods for Administering Drugs in a Closed System

Abstract

A method for administering chemotherapy medicament, which comprises providing a closed-system drug administration kit, performing sterile catheterization on a patient by placing at least the distal tip of the catheter into the patient's bladder to drain the bladder, inserting a syringe containing the medicament into a safety adapter at a proximal end of the catheter to prevent leakage during attachment, injecting the medicament into the bladder with the injector through the adapter and the drain lumen without leakage of the medicament from the patient into an environment while assessing a pain level of the patient, removing the syringe and closing the catheter to hold the medicament in the bladder for a given treatment time, and, after the given treatment time, draining the medicament out of the bladder with a medicament pressure reservoir through the catheter and into the medicament pressure reservoir for disposal of the kit.

1 . A method for administering chemotherapy medicament, which comprises:
 providing a closed-system drug administration kit comprising:
 a safety transfer adapter; 
 a medicament injector containing chemotherapy medicament; 
 a medicament pressure reservoir configured to hold used chemotherapy medicament therein without leakage into the environment of the patient; and 
 a urethral balloon catheter comprising a proximal end connected to the safety transfer adapter, a drain lumen and a distal tip; 
   performing sterile catheterization on a patient by placing at least the distal tip of the catheter into the patient's bladder to drain the bladder;   connecting the medicament injector to the safety transfer adapter in a leak-free manner.   injecting the chemotherapy medicament into the bladder with the medicament injector through the safety adapter and the drain lumen without leakage of the chemotherapy medicament from the patient into an environment of the patient while assessing a pain level of the patient;   holding the chemotherapy medicament in the bladder for a given treatment time; and   after the given treatment time, draining the chemotherapy medicament out of the bladder with the medicament pressure reservoir through the catheter and into the medicament pressure reservoir for disposal of the closed-system drug administration kit.   
     
     
         2 . The method according to  claim 1 , which further comprises confirming that the bladder is substantially drained before injecting the chemotherapy medicament. 
     
     
         3 . The method according to  claim 1 , wherein the medicament injector is a syringe and which further comprises simultaneously removing the syringe and closing the connection between the syringe and the safety adapter after injecting the chemotherapy medicament into the bladder. 
     
     
         4 . The method according to  claim 1 , wherein the given treatment time is between approximately 1 hour and approximately 2 hours. 
     
     
         5 . The method according to  claim 1 , which further comprises, while the chemotherapy medicament is in the bladder, moving the patient to have the chemotherapy medicament coat the inner lining of the bladder. 
     
     
         6 . The method according to  claim 1 , which further comprises, while the chemotherapy medicament is in the bladder, moving the patient to have the chemotherapy medicament entirely coat the inner lining of the bladder. 
     
     
         7 . The method according to  claim 1 , which further comprises, disposing the closed-system drug administration kit according to hazardous medical waste standards. 
     
     
         8 . The method according to  claim 1 , which further comprises, after draining the chemotherapy medicament out of the bladder, conducting a perineal inspection and cleans any leak of the chemotherapy medicament. 
     
     
         9 . The method according to  claim 3 , wherein removal of the syringe automatically closes the catheter. 
     
     
         10 . The method according to  claim 1 , which further comprises, after closing the catheter, removing the medicament injector from the safety transfer adapter in a leak-free manner. 
     
     
         11 . The method according to  claim 1 , wherein the medicament injector is a syringe and which further comprises, closing the connection between the syringe and the safety adapter by locking a plunger of the syringe in place. 
     
     
         12 . The method according to  claim 1 , which further comprises providing the closed-system drug administration kit with the safety transfer adapter connected to the medicament injector in a leak-free manner. 
     
     
         13 . A method for administering chemotherapy medicament, which comprises:
 providing a closed-system drug administration kit comprising:
 a safety transfer adapter; 
 a medicament injector containing chemotherapy medicament; 
 a medicament pressure reservoir configured to hold used chemotherapy medicament therein without leakage into the environment of the patient; and 
 a urethral balloon catheter, a drain lumen and a distal tip; 
   performing sterile catheterization on a patient by placing at least the distal tip of the catheter into the patient's bladder to drain the bladder;   injecting the chemotherapy medicament into the bladder with the medicament injector through the safety adapter and the drain lumen without leakage of the chemotherapy medicament from the patient into an environment of the patient while assessing a pain level of the patient;   holding the chemotherapy medicament in the bladder for a given treatment time; and   after the given treatment time, draining the chemotherapy medicament out of the bladder with the medicament pressure reservoir through the catheter and into the medicament pressure reservoir for disposal of the closed-system drug administration kit.   
     
     
         14 . The method according to  claim 13 , which further comprises confirming that the bladder is substantially drained before injecting the chemotherapy medicament. 
     
     
         15 . The method according to  claim 13 , wherein the given treatment time is between approximately 1 hour and approximately 2 hours. 
     
     
         16 . The method according to  claim 13 , which further comprises, while the chemotherapy medicament is in the bladder, moving the patient to have the chemotherapy medicament coat the inner lining of the bladder. 
     
     
         17 . The method according to  claim 13 , which further comprises, while the chemotherapy medicament is in the bladder, moving the patient to have the chemotherapy medicament entirely coat the inner lining of the bladder. 
     
     
         18 . The method according to  claim 13 , which further comprises, disposing the closed-system drug administration kit according to hazardous medical waste standards. 
     
     
         19 . The method according to  claim 13 , which further comprises, after draining the chemotherapy medicament out of the bladder, conducting a perineal inspection and cleans any leak of the chemotherapy medicament. 
     
     
         20 . The method according to  claim 13 , wherein the medicament injector is a syringe and which further comprises simultaneously removing the syringe and closing the connection between the syringe and the safety adapter after injecting the chemotherapy medicament into the bladder. 
     
     
         21 . The method according to  claim 20 , wherein removal of the syringe automatically closes the connection between the syringe and the safety adapter. 
     
     
         22 . The method according to  claim 13 , which further comprises, after closing the catheter, removing the medicament injector from the safety transfer adapter in a leak-free manner. 
     
     
         23 . The method according to  claim 13 , wherein the medicament injector is a syringe and which further comprises, closing the connection between the syringe and the safety adapter by locking a plunger of the syringe in place. 
     
     
         24 . The method according to  claim 1 , which further comprises providing the closed-system drug administration kit with the safety transfer adapter connected to the medicament injector in a leak-free manner.
