Abstract

In some examples, methods and systems may process one or more payment transactions between a merchant and a customer by registering, by a biometric sensor of a payment object reader or a mobile device, a biometric characteristic as a biometric payment instrument, for example by obtaining data corresponding to a biometric characteristic of the customer. The data is converted into a digital signature of the biometric characteristic and compared with a registered biometric instrument at the time of transaction. If a match is obtained, the customer effects payments through the registered biometric instrument.

Claims

         2 . A system, comprising:
 one or more processors; and one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions executable by the one or more processors, wherein the instructions program the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
 receiving, at one or more servers and from a point-of-sale (POS) terminal, a candidate biometric characteristic associated with a payment request from the POS terminal;
 sending the candidate biometric characteristic to a terminal to facilitate comparison of the candidate biometric characteristic with a registered biometric characteristic of a user locally stored in the terminal, the registered biometric characteristic being linked to a financial account and identity of the user;
 receiving, from the terminal, an indication that the candidate biometric characteristic corresponds to the registered biometric characteristic of the user; and
 authorizing the payment request using the financial account of the user without requesting for additional identification from the user, wherein the payment request is a part of a payment transaction.

         3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the one or more servers additionally receives the candidate biometric characteristic from an e-commerce website.

         4 . The system of claim 2 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving, during a first time period prior to the payment request and by the one or more servers, a biometric characteristic of the user; sending, during the first time period by the one or more servers to the terminal, the biometric characteristic of the user for registration; receiving, during the first time period by the one or more servers and from the terminal, a confirmation of registration of the biometric characteristic of the user as the registered biometric characteristic of the user; and causing, during a second time period after to the payment request by the one or more servers, a transfer of funds from the financial account of the user to a financial account associated with the POS terminal to settle the payment request.

         5 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the POS terminal is located within a threshold distance from the terminal.

         6 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the candidate biometric characteristic received from the POS terminal is tokenized.

         7 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the candidate biometric characteristic includes at least one of:
 a fingerprint; a hand characteristic; an eye characteristic; a facial characteristic; or a voice characteristic.

         8 . The system of claim 2 , the operations further comprising applying one or more conditions associated with the registered biometric characteristic in the authorizing the payment request using the financial account of the user.

         9 . A method implemented in one or more servers for processing a payment transaction, the method comprising:
 receiving, at the one or more servers and from a point-of-sale (POS) terminal, a candidate biometric characteristic associated with a payment request from the POS terminal; sending the candidate biometric characteristic to a terminal to facilitate comparison of the candidate biometric characteristic with a registered biometric characteristic of a user locally stored in the terminal, the registered biometric characteristic being linked to a financial account and identity of the user; receiving, from the terminal, an indication that the candidate biometric characteristic corresponds to the registered biometric characteristic of the user; and authorizing the payment request using the financial account of the user without requesting for additional identification from the user, wherein the payment request is a part of the payment transaction.

         10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the candidate biometric characteristic is a fingerprint processed by a biometric reader associated with the POS terminal as a distance between ridges to obtain a minutiae set.

         11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the candidate biometric characteristic is processed by a biometric reader associated with the POS terminal to create a digital signature, and wherein the digital signature is sent by the POS terminal to the terminal.

         12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the digital signature is encrypted by the POS terminal.

         13 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more servers additionally receives the candidate biometric characteristic from an e-commerce website.

         14 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:
 receiving, during a first time period prior to the payment request and by the one or more servers, a biometric characteristic of the user; sending, during the first time period by the one or more servers to the terminal, the biometric characteristic of the user for registration; receiving, during the first time period by the one or more servers and from the terminal, a confirmation of registration of the biometric characteristic of the user as the registered biometric characteristic of the user; and causing, during a second time period after to the payment request by the one or more servers, a transfer of funds from the financial account of the user to a financial account associated with the POS terminal to settle the payment request.

         15 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the POS terminal establishes a connection with the terminal based at least in part on the terminal entering a geo-fence of the POS terminal.

         16 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the POS terminal is located within a threshold distance from the terminal.

         17 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the candidate biometric characteristic received from the POS terminal is tokenized.

         18 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the candidate biometric characteristic includes at least one of:
 a fingerprint; a hand characteristic; an eye characteristic; a facial characteristic; or a voice characteristic.

         19 . A server for processing a payment transaction, the server comprising:
 one or more processors; and one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions executable by the one or more processors, wherein the instructions program the one or more processors to perform actions comprising:
 receiving, from a point-of-sale (POS) terminal, a candidate biometric characteristic associated with a payment request from the POS terminal;
 sending the candidate biometric characteristic to a terminal to facilitate comparison of the candidate biometric characteristic with a registered biometric characteristic of a user locally stored in the terminal, the registered biometric characteristic being linked to a financial account and identity of the user;
 receiving, from the terminal, an indication that the candidate biometric characteristic corresponds to the registered biometric characteristic of the user; and
 authorizing the payment request using the financial account of the user without requesting for additional identification from the user, wherein the payment request is a part of the payment transaction.

         20 . The server of claim 19 , wherein the candidate biometric characteristic is additionally received from an e-commerce website.

         21 . The server of claim 19 , the actions further comprising:
 receiving, during a first time period prior to the payment request, a biometric characteristic of the user; sending, during the first time period, the biometric characteristic of the user for registration; receiving, during the first time period from the terminal, a confirmation of registration of the biometric characteristic of the user as the registered biometric characteristic of the user; and causing, during a second time period after the payment request, a transfer of funds from the financial account of the user to a financial account associated with the POS terminal to settle the payment request.
