Monitoring gateways to a storage environment including accessing, by a cloud-based monitoring system, a management gateway for a fleet of storage systems in a storage environment; determining, by the cloud-based monitoring system via the management gateway, a location for each storage system in the fleet of storage systems; monitoring, by the cloud-based monitoring system via the management gateway, the fleet of storage systems using the location of each storage system by crawling each storage system to retrieve storage system characteristics; and generating, by the cloud-based monitoring system, a fleet alteration proposal based on the storage system characteristics from each storage system in the fleet of storage systems.

1 . A method comprising:
accessing, by a cloud-based monitoring system, a management gateway for a fleet of storage systems in a storage environment; determining, by the cloud-based monitoring system via the management gateway, a location for each storage system in the fleet of storage systems; monitoring, by the cloud-based monitoring system via the management gateway, the fleet of storage systems using the location of each storage system by crawling each storage system to retrieve storage system characteristics; and generating, by the cloud-based monitoring system, a fleet alteration proposal based on the storage system characteristics from each storage system in the fleet of storage systems.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising matching, by the cloud-based monitoring system, at least one storage system in the fleet of storage system to a replacement storage system using the storage system characteristics and the fleet alteration proposal.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising configuring, by the cloud-based monitoring system, an additional storage system to add to the fleet of storage system based on the storage system characteristics and the fleet alteration proposal.
4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying, by the cloud-based monitoring system via the management gateway, tunables on at least one storage system in the fleet of storage systems based on the storage system characteristics and the fleet alteration proposal.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising migrating, by the cloud-based monitoring system, at least one workload on the fleet of storage systems based on the storage system characteristics and the fleet alteration proposal.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the storage system characteristics comprises workflow metrics, workflow specifications, workload metrics, workload specifications, storage system metrics, and storage system specifications.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein crawling each storage system to retrieve the storage system characteristics comprises crawling at least one storage system in the fleet of storage systems using storage system specific protocols.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein accessing, by the cloud-based monitoring system, the management gateway for the fleet of storage systems in the storage environment comprises accessing a network gateway to gain access to a communications network that includes the management gateway.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fleet alteration proposal is generated based on storage services selected by a user.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the management gateway is local to at least one storage system of the fleet of storage systems.
11 . An apparatus comprising a computer processor, a computer memory operatively coupled to the computer processor, the computer memory having disposed within it computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the apparatus to carry out the steps of:
accessing, by a cloud-based monitoring system, a management gateway for a fleet of storage systems in a storage environment; determining, by the cloud-based monitoring system via the management gateway, a location for each storage system in the fleet of storage systems; monitoring, by the cloud-based monitoring system via the management gateway, the fleet of storage systems using the location of each storage system by crawling each storage system to retrieve storage system characteristics; and generating, by the cloud-based monitoring system, a fleet alteration proposal based on the storage system characteristics from each storage system in the fleet of storage systems.

The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the apparatus to carry out the step of: matching, by the cloud-based monitoring system, at least one storage system in the fleet of storage system to a replacement storage system using the storage system characteristics and the fleet alteration proposal.

The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the apparatus to carry out the step of: configuring, by the cloud-based monitoring system, an additional storage system to add to the fleet of storage system based on the storage system characteristics and the fleet alteration proposal.

The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the apparatus to carry out the step of: modifying, by the cloud-based monitoring system via the management gateway, tunables on at least one storage system in the fleet of storage systems based on the storage system characteristics and the fleet alteration proposal.

The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the apparatus to carry out the step of: migrating, by the cloud-based monitoring system, at least one workload on the fleet of storage systems based on the storage system characteristics and the fleet alteration proposal.
16 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the storage system characteristics comprises workflow metrics, workflow specifications, workload metrics, workload specifications, storage system metrics, and storage system specifications.
17 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein crawling each storage system to retrieve the storage system characteristics comprises crawling at least one storage system in the fleet of storage systems using storage system specific protocols.
18 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein accessing, by the cloud-based monitoring system, the management gateway for the fleet of storage systems in the storage environment comprises accessing a network gateway to gain access to a communications network that includes the management gateway.
19 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fleet alteration proposal is generated based on storage services selected by a user.
20 . A computer program product disposed upon a computer readable medium, the computer program product comprising computer program instructions that, when executed, cause a computer to carry out the steps of:
