Acetabular orthopaedic prosthesis and method
Abstract
An orthopaedic components, prostheses, and methods for a hip arthroplasty are disclosed. An acetabular prosthetic component includes an outer rim and a cavity defined by an inner wall. The cavity is sized to receive a femoral head of a femoral prosthetic component. The inner wall includes a curved surface extending inwardly from the outer rim to an inner end, and a semi-spherical surface connected to the inner end of the curved surface. The inner wall is shaped to resist dislocation of the femoral head component from the cavity and permit the femoral head component to articulate over a range of motion.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A method comprising:
aligning an insert component with a distal cavity of an acetabular shell component; rotating the insert component to position a first rim section of the insert component superior of a second rim section of the insert component; and securing the insert component to the acetabular shell component, wherein the second rim section of the insert component extends parallel to a distal rim of the acetabular shell component, and wherein the insert component includes a semi-spherical inner surface that has a superior edge that extends through an imaginary plane defined by the distal rim of the acetabular shell component when the insert component is secured to the acetabular shell component.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising advancing a femoral head component into engagement with the semi-spherical inner surface of the insert component to seat the femoral head component in the insert component.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein a geometric center of the femoral head component is positioned lateral of the imaginary plane of the acetabular shell component when the femoral head component is seated in the insert component.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein securing the insert component to the acetabular shell component comprises advancing a rib formed on one of the insert component and the acetabular shell component into a groove of the other of the insert component and the acetabular shell component.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
inserting the acetabular shell component into a patient's surgically prepared acetabulum; and securing the acetabular shell component to the patient's bone; wherein aligning the insert component with the distal cavity of the acetabular shell component comprises aligning the insert component with the distal cavity of the acetabular shell component when the acetabular shell component is secured to the patient's bone.
6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising:
orienting the acetabular shell component at a desired anteversion and inclination; wherein securing the acetabular shell component comprises securing the acetabular shell component to the patient's bone when the acetabular shell component is oriented at the desired anteversion and inclination.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein rotating the insert component further comprises rotating the insert component to align a plurality of keys extending outwardly from an outer surface of the insert component with a plurality of slots defined in an inner wall of the acetabular shell component, wherein the inner wall defines the distal cavity of the acetabular shell component.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein securing the insert component to the acetabular shell component comprises advancing the plurality of keys into the plurality of slots.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first rim section extends at a non-orthogonal angle relative to the second rim section.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the non-orthogonal angle is equal to about 15 degrees.
11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the insert component includes an outer wall including a lateral edge that is positioned lateral of the imaginary plane when the insert component is secured to the acetabular shell component.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the insert component includes a component axis that extends orthogonal to the second rim section, and
the semi-spherical inner surface includes a central axis that extends at a non-orthogonal angle relative to the component axis.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the acetabular shell component includes a second central axis that is coincident with the component axis of the insert component when the insert component is secured to the acetabular shell component.
14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the non-orthogonal angle is equal to about 15 degrees.
15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the insert component includes an inner wall extending inwardly from an outer rim of the insert component, the inner wall including a cylindrical inner surface extending inwardly from the outer rim to an inner end, wherein the semi-spherical inner surface is connected to the inner end of the cylindrical inner surface.
16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the cylindrical inner surface includes a second central axis that is coincident with the central axis of the semi-spherical inner surface.
17 . A method comprising:
aligning an insert component with a distal cavity of an acetabular shell component, the insert component including a semi-spherical inner surface; rotating the insert component to position a first side of the insert component superior of a second side the insert component; and securing the insert component to the acetabular shell component such that a portion of the semi-spherical inner surface on the first side extends through an imaginary plane defined by a distal rim of the acetabular shell component when the insert component is secured to the acetabular shell component.
18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising advancing a femoral head component into engagement with the semi-spherical inner surface of the insert component to seat the femoral head component in the insert component.
19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein a geometric center of the femoral head component is positioned lateral of the imaginary plane of the acetabular shell component when the femoral head component is seated in the insert component.
20 . The method of claim 17 , wherein securing the insert component to the acetabular shell component comprises advancing a rib formed on one of the insert component and the acetabular shell component into a groove of the other of the insert component and the acetabular shell component.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
