Abstract

According to one embodiment, a display device includes a first area, a second area, a boundary including a linear first boundary parallel and a curved second boundary and surrounding the first area, and a light-shielding layer including a first light-shielding portion located in the second area. An end portion of the first light-shielding portion on the first area side includes a linear first end portion located on the first boundary, a curved second end portion located on the second boundary in a first round area, and a stepwise third end portion which extends such that the third end portion is bent in a second round area.

What is claimed is:

         1 . A display device comprising:
a first substrate comprising a first pixel row and a second pixel row next to the first pixel row; and a second substrate comprising a black matrix having a plurality of openings, wherein the first pixel row has a first pixel located near an end of the first pixel row, the second pixel row has a second pixel and a third pixel, the second pixel is adjacent to the first pixel, the third pixel is located near an end of the second pixel row, each of the first to third pixel has a first color subpixel, a second color subpixel adjacent to the first color subpixel, and a third color subpixel adjacent to the second color subpixel, the plurality of openings include a plurality of first openings, a plurality of second openings, and a plurality of third openings, each of first areas of the plurality of first openings which overlaps the first to third color subpixel in the first pixel is smaller than each of second areas of the plurality of second openings which overlaps the first to third color subpixel in the second pixel, each of third areas of the plurality of third openings which overlaps the first to third color subpixel in the third pixel is smaller than each of the second areas, the first areas gradually decrease from the third subpixel to the first subpixel in the first pixel, the second areas are substantially same from the third color subpixel to the first color subpixel in the second pixel, and the third areas are substantially same from the third color subpixel to the first color subpixel in the third pixel.

2 . The display device of claim 1 , wherein
the first substrate further comprises a scanning line and a signal line, an outline of each of the plurality of first openings is defined by the black matrix, and has one linear side parallel to the scanning line, two linear sides parallel to the signal line, and one inclined side inclined with respect to the scanning line, an outline of each of the plurality of second openings is defined by the black matrix, and has two linear sides parallel to the scanning line and two linear sides parallel to the signal line, and an outline of each of the plurality of third openings is defined by the black matrix, and has two linear sides parallel to the scanning line and two linear sides parallel to the signal line.

3 . The display device of claim 2 , wherein
in the first pixel, the black matrix between the first subpixel and the second subpixel has a first width, in the third pixel, the black matrix between the first subpixel and the second subpixel has a second width, and the second width is larger than the first width.

4 . The display device of claim 3 , wherein
in the second pixel, the black matrix between the first subpixel and the second subpixel has a third width, and the second width is larger than the third width.

5 . The display device of claim 2 , wherein
the first pixel row has a fourth pixel adjacent to the first pixel, the fourth pixel has the first color subpixel, the second color subpixel, and the third color subpixel, the plurality of openings include a fourth opening, the fourth opening overlaps only the third color subpixel of the fourth pixel, and the black matrix overlaps both an entire of the first color subpixel and an entire of the second color subpixel in the fourth pixel.

         6 . A substrate comprising:
an insulating substrate having a short side, a long side, and a round portion between the short side and the long side; a black matrix on the insulating substrate having a plurality of openings; and a color filter on the black matrix and overlaps the plurality of openings, wherein the plurality of openings are arrayed in a matrix in a row direction and a column direction, the row direction is parallel to the short side, the column direction is parallel to the long side, the plurality of openings have a first opening row and a second opening row adjacent to the first opening row in the column direction, in an area near the round portion, areas of a plurality of openings of the first opening row gradually increase by one each time in the row direction, and in the area near the round portion, areas of a plurality of openings of the second opening row gradually increase by three each time in the row direction.

         7 . The substrate of claim 6 , wherein
in the area near the round portion,
areas of two adjacent openings of the first opening row are different to each other,
three openings of the second opening row each have a first area, and are continuously lined in the row direction, and
other three openings of the second opening row each have a second area, and are continuously lined in the row direction, and
the second area is bigger than the first area.
