Providing Alerts via a Color Changing Transaction Card
Abstract
Methods and systems disclosed herein may communicate information, such as alerts and notifications, to a cardholder via a color-changing transaction card. In particular, the cardholder may configure one or more thresholds that establish when a transaction card may change colors. For instance, a transaction card may change colors at, or while approaching, a first threshold. The transaction card may change colors at, or while approaching, a second threshold. When the cardholder's balance goes below the thresholds, the transaction card may revert back to the lower threshold color or the original color of the transaction card. Using the techniques described herein a financial institution may convey information to a cardholder in a way that does not require the cardholder to digitally engage with the financial institution.

1 . A transaction card comprising:
a chip configured to:
execute signals received from a point-of-sale terminal; and
receive, from the point-of-sale terminal, a signal to change a color of the transaction card;
at least one liquid crystal field comprising:
a first electrode;
a second electrode; and
a liquid crystal disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode; and
a transistor, communicatively coupled to the chip, to control a flow of current from the first electrode to the second electrode, wherein the flow of current from the first electrode to the second electrode causes the liquid crystal to realign to change color.
2 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the transistor closes to allow the flow of current from the first electrode to the second electrode in response to the signal to change the color of the transaction card.
3 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the liquid crystal field is transparent in a passive state.
4 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode comprise transparent materials.
5 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode comprises an optically transparent material and the second electrode comprises a material with a reflective coating.
6 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the at least one liquid crystal field changing color changes a color of the transaction card.
7 . The transaction card of claim 1 , comprising:
a first contact pad and a second contact pad configured to receive a voltage to power the transaction card.
8 . The transaction card of claim 7 , wherein the first contact pad and the second contact pad are configured to receive signals from the point-of-sale terminal.
9 . The transaction card of claim 1 , comprising:
a short-range wireless transceiver configured to receive a voltage to power the transaction card and to receive signals from the point-of-sale terminal.
10 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the chip is configured to receive, from a second point-of-sale terminal, a second signal, wherein the second signal returns the transaction card to an original color.
11 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the signal to change the color of the transaction card is received from a server associated with an issuer of the transaction card.
12 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the at least one liquid crystal field changing color provides an alert to a cardholder.
13 . The transaction card of claim 12 , wherein the alert comprises a spending alert.
14 . The transaction card of claim 12 , wherein the chip is configured to transmit the alert to a mobile device of the cardholder.
15 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising:
a power source configured to supply power to at least the chip and the at least one liquid crystal field.
16 . The transaction card of claim 15 , wherein the power source comprises an inductive coil to recharge the power source via electromagnetic induction.
17 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode comprises:
a glass substrate; and a doped film disposed on a first surface of the glass substrate.
18 . The transaction card of claim 17 , wherein a polarizing filter is located on a second surface of the glass substrate.
19 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the second electrode comprises:
a glass substrate; and a doped film disposed on a first surface of the glass substrate.
