Abstract
The inventions disclosed herein relate to the findings that L. reuteri bacteria isolated from dog saliva is capable of modulating a subject's body weight. In certain aspects, the inventions disclosed herein relate to the findings that L. reuteri species isolated from dog saliva elevates a subject's oxytocin levels in blood plasma and surprisingly, the killed (lysed) bacteria was sufficient to achieve the observed effects.

A method of promoting weight loss in a subject, wherein the method comprises administering an effective amount of a composition to the subject and thereby promoting weight loss in the subject, wherein the composition comprises a lysate, and wherein the lysate comprises killed Lactobacillus reuteri bacteria.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the L. reuteri bacteria are isolated from dog saliva.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the L. reuteri comprises L. reuteri isolate 2546.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the L. reuteri comprises L. reuteri ATCC 6475.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition reduces the subject's subcutaneous fat.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition reduces the subject's visceral fat.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is a mammal.
8 . A method of treating obesity in a subject, wherein the method comprises administering an effective amount of a composition to the subject and thereby treating the obesity, wherein the composition comprises a lysate, wherein the lysate comprises killed Lactobacillus reuteri bacteria.
9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the L. reuteri bacteria are isolated from dog saliva.
10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the L. reuteri comprises L. reuteri isolate 2546.
11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the L. reuteri comprises L. reuteri ATCC 6475.
12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the composition reduces the subject's subcutaneous fat.
13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the composition reduces the subject's visceral fat.
14 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the subject is a mammal.

A method of increasing oxytocin concentration in the central nervous system of a subject, wherein the method comprises administering an effective amount of a composition to the subject and thereby increasing plasma oxytocin concentration in the central nervous system subject, wherein the composition comprises a lysate, and wherein the lysate comprises killed Lactobacillus reuteri bacteria.
16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the L. reuteri bacteria are isolated from dog saliva.
17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the L. reuteri comprises L. reuteri isolate 2546.
18 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the L. reuteri comprises L. reuteri ATCC 6475.
19 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the subject is a mammal.
20 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the central nervous system comprises the brain.
21 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the central nervous system comprises the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus.

A method of accelerating healing of a skin wound in a subject, wherein the method comprises administering an effective amount of a composition to the subject and thereby accelerating healing of the skin wound, wherein the composition comprises a lysate, and wherein the lysate comprises killed Lactobacillus reuteri bacteria.
23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the L. reuteri bacteria are isolated from dog saliva.

A method of reducing a subject's blood neutrophil count, wherein the method comprises administering an effective amount of a composition to the subject and thereby reducing the subject's blood neutrophil count, wherein the composition comprises a lysate, and wherein the lysate comprises killed Lactobacillus reuteri bacteria.
28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the L. reuteri bacteria are isolated from dog saliva.
29 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the L. reuteri comprises L. reuteri isolate 2546.

31 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the reduction in the subject's blood neutrophil count decreases inflammation in the subject.
