Claims

Abstract

When configured, a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) can be used to identify new beams. If CSI-RS based monitoring fails to identify new beams, and no other reference signals (RS) are used for beam management, the user equipment cannot identify a new beam. However, instead of using a 4-step random access channel (RACH) procedure for beam recovery request transmission, a modified 2-step contention-based RACH procedure can save overhead and reduce latency associated with the 4-step procedure.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method, comprising:
 determining, by a user equipment comprising a processor, a beam failure of a first beam employed for communications by the user equipment; and   in response to determining the beam failure and utilizing a synchronization signal block associated with a synchronization signal, identifying, by the user equipment, a second beam for the communications by the user equipment.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising sending, by the user equipment to network equipment, identification data that identifies the second beam. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the synchronization signal block comprises a new radio primary synchronization signal. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the synchronization signal block comprises a new radio secondary synchronization signal. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the synchronization signal block comprises a new radio primary broadcast channel. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein utilizing the synchronization signal block comprises utilizing the synchronization signal block with a contention-based channel. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein utilizing the synchronization signal block with the contention-based channel comprises:
 sending, by the user equipment to network equipment, identifier data representative of preamble data associated with the contention-based channel to indicate the utilizing of the synchronization signal block, and   in response to sending the identifier data, receiving, by the user equipment from the network equipment, timing data associated with a timing alignment instruction to synchronize the communications by the user equipment.   
     
     
         8 . A mobile device, comprising:
 a processor; and   a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:
 determining a beam failure of a first beam employed for communications by the mobile device; and 
 in response to determining the beam failure, identifying, via a synchronization signal block associated with a synchronization signal, a second beam for the communications by the mobile device. 
   
     
     
         9 . The mobile device of  claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprises sending, to a network device, data that identifies the second beam. 
     
     
         10 . The mobile device of  claim 8 , wherein the synchronization signal block comprises a new radio primary synchronization signal. 
     
     
         11 . The mobile device of  claim 8 , wherein the synchronization signal block comprises a new radio secondary synchronization signal. 
     
     
         12 . The mobile device of  claim 8 , wherein the synchronization signal block comprises a new radio primary broadcast channel. 
     
     
         13 . The mobile device of  claim 8 , wherein the identifying further comprises employing a contention-based channel with the synchronization signal block. 
     
     
         14 . The mobile device of  claim 13 , wherein employing the contention-based channel with the synchronization signal block comprises:
 sending, to a network device, identifier data representative of preamble data associated with the contention-based channel to indicate the utilizing of the synchronization signal block, and   in response to sending the identifier data, receiving, from the network device, timing data associated with a timing alignment instruction to synchronize the communications by the mobile device.   
     
     
         15 . A non-transitory machine-readable medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processor of a network device, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:
 determining a beam failure of a first beam employed for communications by the network device; and   in response to determining the beam failure, selecting, via a synchronization signal block associated with a synchronization signal, a second beam for the communications by the network device.   
     
     
         16 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of  claim 15 , wherein the network device is a first network device, and wherein the operations further comprising sending, to a second network device, data that indicates the second beam. 
     
     
         17 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of  claim 15 , wherein the synchronization signal block comprises a new radio primary synchronization signal. 
     
     
         18 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of  claim 15 , wherein the synchronization signal block comprises a new radio secondary synchronization signal. 
     
     
         19 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of  claim 15 , wherein the synchronization signal block comprises a new radio primary broadcast channel. 
     
     
         20 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of  claim 15 , wherein the selecting further comprises employing a contention-based channel with the synchronization signal block.
