Abstract

Devices and methods for positioning a portion of a sensor at a first predetermined location, displacing the portion of the sensor from the first predetermined location to a second predetermined location, and detecting one or signals associated with an analyte level of a patient at the second predetermined location are disclosed. Also provided are systems and kits for use in analyte monitoring.

         2 . A sensor insertion assembly, comprising:
 an inserter, comprising:
 a housing; 
 a button configured to be actuated by a subject; and 
 a sharp and a spring, both disposed in an interior of the housing; and 
   a glucose sensor configured to generate one or more signals associated with an in vivo glucose level in a bodily fluid of the subject,   wherein the button, when actuated, is configured to release energy from the spring and cause the glucose sensor and the sharp to advance to a first predetermined location at a first velocity, wherein the first predetermined location is an insertion site on the subject's skin,   wherein after reaching the first predetermined location, the inserter is configured to advance a portion of the glucose sensor to a predetermined insertion depth and displace the sharp to a second predetermined location at a second velocity different from the first velocity.   
     
     
         3 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 2 , wherein the first velocity comprises a first speed, and wherein the second velocity comprises a second speed different from the first speed. 
     
     
         4 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 3 , wherein the second speed is less than the first speed. 
     
     
         5 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 2 , wherein, at the predetermined insertion depth, the portion of the glucose sensor is at a predetermined angle with the subject's skin. 
     
     
         6 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 5 , wherein the predetermined angle is an acute angle. 
     
     
         7 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 5 , wherein the predetermined angle is about 90 degrees. 
     
     
         8 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 2 , wherein the second predetermined location is a predetermined depth from a surface of the subject's skin. 
     
     
         9 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 8 , wherein the predetermined depth is between 3 mm to 9 mm from the surface of the patient's skin. 
     
     
         10 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 2 , wherein the spring is configured to cause the advancement of the glucose sensor and the sharp to the first predetermined location without further user intervention. 
     
     
         11 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 2 , wherein the spring is a wound spring. 
     
     
         12 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 2 , wherein the glucose sensor comprises an interferant-eliminating layer. 
     
     
         13 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 2 , further comprising an adhesive mount configured to capture a proximal section of the glucose sensor when the sharp is displaced to the second predetermined location. 
     
     
         14 . The sensor insertion assembly of  claim 13 , wherein the glucose sensor is configured to disengage from the sharp after the sharp is displaced to the second predetermined location.
