Abstract

A method of optimizing traffic on a mobile device includes determining that an application is inactive based on historical behavior of the application and blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the application that is determined to be inactive based on historical behavior. A related mobile device is also provided.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method of optimizing traffic on a mobile device, comprising:
 determining that an application is inactive based on historical behavior of the application;   blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the application that is determined to be inactive based on historical behavior.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein blocking traffic further includes blocking traffic after a period of time that the screen of the mobile device has been off. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein blocking traffic further includes blocking traffic based on state of resources of the mobile device. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein blocking traffic further includes blocking traffic based on cost of the application. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein, before blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the inactive application, the method includes beginning polling offload optimization. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein, before blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the inactive application, the method includes aligning transactions from different applications on the same radio connection. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , further including applying a signaling optimization strategy to background traffic that is different than an applied signaling optimization strategy of foreground traffic. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the inactive application is stopped when a backlight of the mobile device is on. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the inactive application is stopped when the mobile device screen is on. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein, when an application stays in the background beyond a configurable timeout value, blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the inactive application resumes. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the historical behavior includes a determination of poll intervals and patterns related to historical traffic. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the inactive application is stopped when a push message is received. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein an application behavior detector on the mobile device determines that the application is inactive based on the historical behavior of the application, and the application behavior detector detects whether an application is operating in the background or foreground. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the inactive application comprises blocking for a portion of time and ceasing blocking for a remaining portion of time. 
     
     
         15 . A mobile device having computer executable instructions stored thereon and configured to:
 determine that an application is inactive based on historical behavior of the application; and   block traffic originating from or directed towards the application that is determined to be inactive based on historical data.   
     
     
         16 . The mobile device of  claim 15 , wherein the mobile device is configured to block traffic after a period of time that the screen of the mobile device has been off. 
     
     
         17 . The mobile device of  claim 15 , wherein the mobile device is configured to block traffic based on state of resources of the mobile device. 
     
     
         18 . The mobile device of  claim 15 , wherein the mobile device is configured to block traffic based on cost of the application. 
     
     
         19 . The mobile device of  claim 15 , wherein, before blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the inactive application, the mobile device is configured to begin polling offload optimization. 
     
     
         20 . The mobile device of  claim 15 , wherein, before blocking traffic originating from or directed towards the inactive application, the mobile device is configure to align transactions from different applications on the same radio connection.
