Abstract

An Internet of Things (IoT) device includes a transceiver to transmit and receive data packets. The IoT device also includes a controller to alternate between upstream and downstream relaying of data packets via the transceiver.

         2 . An edge relay device, comprising:
 a transceiver to transmit and receive data packets; and   a controller to:
 alternate between upstream and downstream relaying of data packets via the transceiver; 
 identify receipt of a packet to be relayed; and 
 after receipt of the packet to be relayed, control the transceiver to relay the packet, and switch a relay direction. 
   
     
     
         3 . The edge relay device of  claim 2 , wherein the transceiver is to transmit and receive data packets using satellite communication technologies. 
     
     
         4 . The edge relay device of  claim 3 , wherein the transceiver is to transmit and receive data packets using satellite uplink technologies. 
     
     
         5 . The edge relay device of  claim 2 , wherein the controller is to configure the transceiver to:
 enter an upstream mode to identify packets that require upstream relay support; and   enter a downstream mode to identify packets that require downstream relay support.   
     
     
         6 . The edge relay device of  claim 5 , wherein the controller is to enter the upstream mode or downstream mode in response to an event. 
     
     
         7 . The edge relay device of  claim 6 , wherein the event comprises receipt of the packet to be relayed. 
     
     
         8 . The edge relay device of  claim 6 , wherein the event comprises an inversion of the transceiver polarity. 
     
     
         9 . The edge relay device of  claim 6 , wherein the event comprises an activation of the transceiver. 
     
     
         10 . The edge relay device of  claim 6 , wherein the event comprises a registry write operation. 
     
     
         11 . A communication network, comprising:
 an edge device;   a core network device; and   an edge relay device, comprising:
 a transceiver to transmit and receive data packets to and from the edge device and the core network device; and 
 a controller to alternate between upstream and downstream relaying of data packets between the edge device and the core network device via the transceiver. 
   
     
     
         12 . The communication network of  claim 11 , wherein the transceiver is to communicate with the edge device or the core network device using satellite communication technologies. 
     
     
         13 . The communication network of  claim 12 , wherein the transceiver is to communicate with the edge device or the core network device using satellite uplink technologies. 
     
     
         14 . The communication network of  claim 11 , wherein the controller is to configure the transceiver to:
 enter an upstream mode to identify packets that require upstream relay support; and   enter a downstream mode to identify packets that require downstream relay support.   
     
     
         15 . The communication network of  claim 14 , wherein the controller is to enter the upstream mode or downstream mode in response to an event. 
     
     
         16 . The communication network of  claim 15 , wherein the event comprises receipt of the packet to be relayed. 
     
     
         17 . The communication network of  claim 15 , wherein the event comprises an inversion of the transceiver polarity. 
     
     
         18 . The communication network of  claim 15 , wherein the event comprises an activation of the transceiver. 
     
     
         19 . The communication network of  claim 15 , wherein the event comprises a registry write operation. 
     
     
         20 . An edge relay device, comprising:
 a transceiver to transmit and receive data packets using satellite communication technologies; and   a controller to alternate between upstream and downstream relaying of data packets via the transceiver.   
     
     
         21 . The edge relay device of  claim 20 , wherein the transceiver is to communicate using satellite uplink technologies. 
     
     
         22 . The edge relay device of  claim 20 , wherein the controller is to configure the transceiver to:
 enter an upstream mode to identify packets that require upstream relay support; and   enter a downstream mode to identify packets that require downstream relay support.   
     
     
         23 . The edge relay device of  claim 22 , wherein the controller is to enter the upstream mode or downstream mode in response to an event. 
     
     
         24 . The edge relay device of  claim 23 , wherein the event comprises receipt of the packet to be relayed.
