System and method for temporally adaptive media playback

Abstract

Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and computer readable-media for temporally adaptive media playback. The method for adaptive media playback includes estimating or determining an amount of time between a first event and a second event, selecting media content to fill the estimated amount of time between the first event and the second event, and playing the selected media content possibly at a reasonably different speed to fit the time interval. One embodiment includes events that are destination-based or temporal-based. Another embodiment includes adding, removing, speeding up, or slowing down selected media content in order to fit the estimated amount of time between the first event and the second event or to modify the selected media content to adjust to an updated estimated amount of time. Another embodiment bases selected media content on a user or group profile.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A device, comprising:
 a processing system including a processor; and   a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the device, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:   determining a first location of a communication device at a first time, wherein the communication device is associated with a user;   determining a second location associated with the communication device at a second time;   determining a first time period based on the first time and the second time;   selecting a first group of media content according to the first time period; and   providing the first group of media content to the communication device, wherein the communication device presents the first group of media content while traveling from the first location to the second location during the first time period.   
     
     
         2 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the operations comprise:
 determining a third location associated with the communication device at a third time;   determining a second time period based on the first time and the third time; and   providing instructions to the communication device to adjust the first group of media content according to the second time period.   
     
     
         3 . The device of  claim 2 , wherein the instructions indicate to the communication device to remove a portion of the first group of media content. 
     
     
         4 . The device of  claim 2 , wherein the operations comprise providing a second group of media content , wherein the instructions indicate to the communication device to present the second group of media content during a portion of the second time period. 
     
     
         5 . The device of  claim 4 , wherein the second group of media content comprises one of an advertisement content, a news report, a weather report, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         6 . The device of  claim 4 , wherein the operations comprise:
 obtaining a user profile associated with the user of the communication device; and   selecting the second group of media content based on the user profile.   
     
     
         7 . The device of  claim 4 , wherein the operations comprise:
 obtaining electronic calendar content associated with the user of the communication device; and   selecting the second group of media content based on the electronic calendar content.   
     
     
         8 . The device of  claim 4 , wherein the operations comprise:
 obtaining global positioning system (GPS) data associated with the user of the communication device; and   selecting the second group of media content based on the GPS data.   
     
     
         9 . The device of  claim 4 , wherein the operations comprise:
 generating a first notification of the second group of media content based on a change from the first time period to the second time period, wherein the first notification indicates the providing of the second group of media content; and   providing the first notification to the communication device, wherein the communication device presents the first notification.   
     
     
         10 . The device of  claim 1 , wherein the operations comprise:
 determining a third group of media content is scheduled to be broadcast within a third time period;   providing the third group of media content to the communication device;   generating a second notification that indicates the third group of media content is being provided to the communication device; and   providing the second notification to the communication device, wherein the communication device presents the second notification and the third group of media content.   
     
     
         11 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage device having instructions stored which, when executed by a computing device, result in the computing device performing operations comprising:
 determining a first location of a communication device at a first time, wherein the communication device is associated with a user;   determining a second location associated with the communication device at a second time;   determining a first time period based on the first time and the second time;   selecting a first group of media content according to the first time period;   providing the first group of media content to the communication device, wherein the communication device presents the first group of media content while traveling from the first location to the second location during the first time period;   determining a third location associated with the communication device at a third time;   determining a second time period based on the first time and the third time; and   providing a second group of media content, wherein the communication device presents the second group of media content during a portion of the second time period.   
     
     
         12 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage device of  claim 11 , wherein the second group of media content comprises one of an advertisement content, a news report, a weather report, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         13 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage device of  claim 11 , wherein the operations comprise:
 obtaining a user profile associated with the user of the communication device; and   selecting the second group of media content based on the user profile.   
     
     
         14 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage device of  claim 11 , wherein the operations comprise:
 obtaining electronic calendar content associated with the user of the communication device; and   selecting the second group of media content based on the electronic calendar content.   
     
     
         15 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage device of  claim 11 , wherein the operations comprise:
 obtaining global positioning system (GPS) data associated with the user of the communication device; and   selecting the second group of media content based on the GPS data.   
     
     
         16 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage device of  claim 11 , wherein the operations comprise:
 generating a first notification of the second group of media content based on a change from the first time period to the second time period, wherein the first notification indicates the providing of the second group of media content; and   providing the first notification to the communication device, wherein the communication device presents the first notification.   
     
     
         17 . A method, comprising:
 determining, by a processing system including a processor, a first location of a communication device at a first time, wherein the communication device is associated with a user;   determining, by the processing system, a second location associated with the communication device at a second time;   determining, by the processing system, a first time period based on the first time and the second time;   selecting, by the processing system, a first group of media content according to the first time period;   providing, by the processing system, the first group of media content to the communication device, wherein the communication device presents the first group of media content while traveling from the first location to the second location during the first time period;   determining, by the processing system, a second group of media content is scheduled to be broadcast within a third time period;   providing, by the processing system, the second group of media content to the communication device;   generating, by the processing system, a notification that indicates the second group of media content is being provided to the communication device; and   providing, by the processing system, the notification to the communication device, wherein the communication device presents the notification and the second group of media content.   
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17 , comprising obtaining, by the processing system, historical media content consumption information associated with the user, wherein the determining of the second group of media content is scheduled to be broadcast comprises determining, by the processing system, the second group of media content is scheduled to be broadcast according to the historical media content consumption information. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 17 , comprising obtaining, by the processing system, a user profile associated with the user, wherein the determining of the second group of media content comprises determining, by the processing system, the second group of media content is scheduled to be broadcast according to the user profile. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 17 , comprising obtaining, by the processing system, user preferences associated with the user, wherein the determining of the second group of media content comprises determining, by the processing system, the second group of media content is scheduled to be broadcast according to the user preferences.
