Abstract
Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a modular fiber optic distribution system for enhancing installation flexibility and for facilitating adding components to a terminal housing over time so as to delay cost. The system is configured to allow components (e.g., inserts, add-on modules, etc.) to be readily added to the terminal housing over time to expand capacity, provide upgrades and to provide forward and backward compatibility.

15 . A telecommunications enclosure comprising:
a first housing piece; a second housing piece detachably connected to the first housing piece, the second housing piece including a plurality of access ports; a plurality of add-on modules selectively and detachably coupled to the second
housing piece at a different one of the plurality of the access ports; and
an intermediate housing piece disposed between the first and second housing pieces.
16 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein the intermediate housing piece includes a fiber optic organizer.
17 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 16 , wherein the fiber optic organizer includes fiber management trays carried on a carrier.
18 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the plurality of access ports has a different shape, size, and/or orientation than another one of the plurality of access ports.
19 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein a seal is disposed between the first housing piece and the intermediate housing piece to environmentally seal a combined interior of the first housing piece and the intermediate housing piece at an intersection of the first housing piece and the intermediate housing piece.
20 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein the first housing piece defines one or more additional access ports.
21 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein the add-on modules have a form factor that complement with a form factor of the access ports to allow the add-on modules to be detachably connected to the second housing piece at the access ports.
22 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein the add-on modules each include a sleeve.
23 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein a blank cover is mounted over a respective one of the access ports.
24 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein a portion of the add-on module is located outside of the second housing piece upon attachment to the second housing piece.
25 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the plurality of add-on modules contain a passive optical power splitter or a wavelength division multi-plexer.
26 . The telecommunications enclosure of claim 17 , wherein the fiber management trays are pivotally connected to the carrier.
27 . A fiber management organizer for a telecommunications closure, the fiber management organizer extending along a longitudinal axis between a proximal end and a distal end of the fiber management organizer, along a transverse axis between a first side and a second side of the fiber management organizer, and along a vertical axis between a top and a bottom of the fiber management organizer, the fiber management organizer comprising:
a main body including a wall defining an upper region above the wall and a lower region below the wall; a plurality of fiber management trays; a tray carrier pivotally coupled to the main body in the upper region by a first hinge defining a first pivot axis, the tray carrier including:
a support surface configured to support a stack of the fiber management trays;
a coupler surface projecting from the support surface; and
a plurality of hinge structures positioned on the coupler surface,
wherein the fiber management trays are independently pivotally coupled to the hinge structures to form second hinges, each of the second hinges defining a second pivot axis.
28 . The fiber management organizer of claim 27 , wherein the upper region includes an upper fiber management portion; and wherein the lower region includes a lower fiber management portion.
29 . The fiber management organizer of claim 27 , wherein the tray carrier includes first and second fiber guide channels for guiding one or more optical fibers onto one or more of the fiber management trays.
30 . The fiber management organizer of claim 27 , wherein each of the fiber management trays includes a fiber management surface, a spool structure, and a splice holding area including splice body holders supported by the fiber management surface.
31 . A modular system comprising:
a terminal housing defining a plurality of terminal ports each having a terminal port form factor; a first housing piece and a second housing piece, the first housing piece defining a plurality of connector ports each having a connection port passageway for receiving fiber optic connectors, the first housing piece including a flange that extends around a periphery thereof and retention arms for securing the first and second housing pieces together, the retention arms extending from the flange of the first housing piece; and a securing element for respectively retaining the fiber optic connectors in the connection port passageways of the plurality of connector ports.
32 . The modular system of claim 31 , wherein the module insert includes an integrated form factor that matches the terminal port form factor such that the module insert is capable of being mated with one of the plurality of terminal ports.
33 . The modular system of claim 31 , wherein at least one of the terminal ports includes a floating fiber optic adapter, and wherein the fiber optic connector mates with the floating fiber optic adapter when the module insert is mated with one of the plurality of terminal ports.
34 . The modular system of claim 31 , wherein the terminal housing includes keying rails positioned within the plurality of terminal ports, wherein the keying rails are parallel to a connector insertion axis, and wherein the module insert includes keying notches that receive the keying rails when the module insert is inserted into one of the plurality of terminal ports.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
