Abstract

A control circuit includes a pump shutdown module responsive to one or more inputs indicating at least from the group consisting of an operational error at the implantable blood pump and an adverse physiological state of a user of the implantable blood pump. The pump shutdown module ceases operation of the implantable blood pump in response to the one or more inputs. A pump restart module configured to resume operation of the implantable blood pump in response to a first pump restart input and a second pump restart input is included. A pump restart lockout module configured to initiate a pump lockout mode in response to a lockout input is included. The pump lockout mode prevents resumption of operation of the implantable blood pump in response to the first pump restart input and allows resumption of operation of the implantable blood pump in response to the second pump restart input.

         2 . A system comprising:
 a blood pump configured to pump blood of a patient; and   a control circuit configured to:
 control the blood pump to cease operation, 
 after controlling the blood pump to cease operation, control the blood pump to resume operation in response to receiving a first pump restart input or a second pump restart input different from the first pump restart input; and 
 initiate a pump lockout mode, in which the control circuit:
 prevents resumption of operation of the blood pump in response to the first pump restart input; and 
 allows resumption of operation of the blood pump in response to the second pump restart input. 
 
   
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to control the blood pump to cease operation in response to detecting at least one of an operational error at the blood pump, an operational error at electronics associated with the blood pump, or an adverse physiological state of the patient. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to control the blood pump to cease operation in response to detecting a low flow condition, a low power condition, a suction condition, a high pressure condition, or an overheating condition. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to initiate the pump lockout mode in response to determining an amount of time since the operation of the blood pump was ceased is greater than or equal to a predetermined amount of time. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 2 , further comprising an interface, wherein the control circuit is configured to receive data indicative of at least one of the first pump restart input or the second pump restart input via the interface. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 2 , further comprising a user interface, wherein the first pump restart input is an automatic input and the second pump restart input is a manual input received by the control circuit from a user via the user interface. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the second pump restart input is inaccessible to the patient. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to control the blood pump to resume operation in response to receiving the first pump restart input or the second pump restart input by at least determining at least one of a clearance of high pressure condition, a clearance of suction condition, a clearance of low flow condition, or a clearance of overheating condition. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the second pump restart input includes an instruction to clear the pump lockout mode. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 10 , wherein the first and second pump restart inputs differ in that the second pump restart input includes an instruction to clear the pump lockout mode. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to cause an alert to be provided to the patient or a clinician in response to initiation of the pump lockout mode. 
     
     
         13 . A system, comprising:
 an implantable blood pump; and   a control circuit configured to:
 stop operation of the implantable blood pump in response to detecting a stop condition, 
 after stopping operation of the implantable blood pump, receive a first pump restart input indicating clearance of the stop condition, 
 determine whether a pump lockout mode of the blood pump is activated, 
 in response to determining the pump lockout mode of the blood pump is not activated, restart operation of the blood pump in response to the first pump restart input, 
 in response to determining the pump lockout mode of the blood pump is activated, prevent resumption of operation of the blood pump in response to the first pump restart input, 
 receive a second pump restart input while the pump lockout mode of the blood pump is activated, and 
 control the implantable blood pump to resume operation in response to receiving the second pump restart input. 
   
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to restart operation of the blood pump in response to the second pump restart input when the pump lockout mode of the blood pump is not activated. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the stop condition comprises at least one of an operational error at the blood pump, an operational error at electronics associated with the blood pump, or an adverse physiological state of the patient. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is configured to initiate the pump lockout mode in response to determining an amount of time since the operation of the blood pump was stopped is greater than or equal to a predetermined amount of time. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 13 , further comprising an interface, wherein the control circuit is configured to receive data indicative of at least one of the first pump restart input or the second pump restart input via the interface. 
     
     
         18 . A method comprising:
 controlling, by a control circuit, a blood pump to cease operation;   after controlling the blood pump to cease operation, controlling, by the control circuit, the blood pump to resume operation in response to receiving a first pump restart input or a second pump restart input different from the first pump restart input; and   initiating, by the control circuit, a pump lockout mode, wherein in the pump lockout mode:
 the control circuit prevents resumption of operation of the blood pump in response to the first pump restart input, and 
 the control circuit allows resumption of operation of the blood pump in response to the second pump restart input. 
   
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein controlling the blood pump to cease operation comprises controlling the blood pump to cease operation cease operation in response to detecting at least one of an operational error at the blood pump, an operational error at electronics associated with the blood pump, or an adverse physiological state of the patient. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein initiating the pump lockout mode comprises initiating the pump lockout mode in response to determining an amount of time since the operation of the blood pump was ceased is greater than or equal to a predetermined amount of time. 
     
     
         21 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein controlling the blood pump to resume operation in response to receiving the first pump restart input or the second pump restart input comprises controlling the blood pump to resume operation in response to detecting at least one of a clearance of high pressure condition, a clearance of suction condition, a clearance of low flow condition, or a clearance of overheating condition.
