Abstract

The techniques described herein relate to methods, apparatus, and computer readable media configured to accessing multimedia data that includes a plurality of media tracks that each include an associated series of samples of media data, and a derived track comprising a set of derivation operations to perform to generate a series of samples of media data for the derived track. A derivation operation of the set is performed to generate a portion of media data for the derived track, which includes: determining, based on the derivation operation, a group of media tracks from the plurality by determining each media track in the group meets a grouping criteria, selecting one media track from the group of media tracks, and adding a sample from the one media track to the derived track to generate the portion of the derived track.

Claims

What is claimed is:

1 . A method implemented by a client device in communication with a server, the method comprising:
receiving, from the server, a media description file for media data hosted by the server, the media description file comprising a general media request description; transmitting, to the server, a set of one or more parameters associated with the client device, a communication link between the client device and the server, or both; receiving, from the server, an adapted track comprising a portion of the media data, wherein:
the portion of the media data is adapted for the client device based on the set of one or more parameters; and
the portion of the media data is generated by performing a derivation operation to a track comprising the portion of the media data from a group of tracks that each comprise different media data, and adding the portion of the media data to the adapted track to generate a portion of the adapted track.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the media description file comprises a Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) (DASH) manifest file comprising an adaptation set, wherein the adaptation set comprises a single representation with a placeholder Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for the adapted track.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
determining an updated parameter for the set of one or more parameters; and transmitting the updated parameter to the server.

4 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising:
receiving a second portion of the media data of the adapted track, wherein the second portion of the media data is adapted for the client device based on the updated parameter.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the second portion of the media data is generated by performing a second derivation operation to select a second track comprising the second portion of the media data from the group of tracks, and adding the second portion of the media data to the adapted track to generate a second portion of the adapted track.

6 . A method implemented by a server in communication with a client device, the method comprising:
receiving, from the client device, a set of one or more parameters associated with the client device, a communication link between the client device and the server, or both; accessing multimedia data comprising:
a plurality of media tracks, each media track comprising an associated series of samples of media data; and
 a derived track comprising a set of derivation operations to perform to generate a series of samples of media data;
performing a derivation operation of the set of derivation operations to generate a portion of media data for an adapted track, comprising: determining, based on the derivation operation, a group of media tracks from the plurality of media tracks, comprising determining each media track in the group of tracks meets a grouping criteria, wherein the group of media tracks is a subset of the plurality of media tracks; and
performing the derivation operation with the determined group of media tracks as inputs, based on the set of one or more parameters, to generate the portion of the adapted track; and
transmitting the adapted track comprising the portion of the media data to the client device.

         7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein:
the grouping criteria comprises an alternate group value; and determining each media track in the group of tracks meets the grouping criteria comprises determining each media track in the group of tracks comprises an alternate group equal to the alternate group value.

         8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein:
the grouping criteria comprises a switch group value; and determining each media track in the group of tracks meets the grouping criteria comprises determining each media track in the group of tracks comprises a switch group equal to the switch group value.

9 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:
receiving a request for a media description file from the client device; and transmitting the media description file to the client device.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the media description file comprises a Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) (DASH) manifest file comprising an adaptation set, wherein the adaptation set comprises a single representation with a placeholder Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for the adapted track.

11 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:
receiving, from the client device, an updated parameter for the set of one or more parameters from the client device.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:
transmitting, to the client, a second portion of media data of the adapted track, wherein the second portion of the media data is adapted for the client device based on the updated parameter.

13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:
performing a second derivation operation to select a second track comprising the second portion of the media data from the group of tracks; and adding the second portion of the media data to the adapted track to generate a second portion of the adapted track.
