Vm creation by installation media probe
Abstract
Described embodiments provide systems and methods for running virtual machines based by probing installation media. A media probe executing on one or more processors may identify an installation media for configuring a virtual machine on a type of operating system. The media probe may detect the type of operating system from the installation media. A virtualization manager executing on the one or more processors may determine a virtualization mode for configuration of the virtual machine based on the type of operating system detected from the installation media. The virtualization manager may create the virtual machine in accordance with the virtualization mode determined based on the type of operating system.
Claims

1 . A method comprising:
determining, by one or more processors, a plurality of virtualization modes that are supported by a type of operating system detected within an installation media to be used to create a virtual machine; causing, by the one or more processors, display of one or more user interfaces to receive a selection of a virtualization mode of the plurality of virtualization modes to be used to create the virtual machine and one or more settings to configure the virtual machine in accordance with the virtualization mode; receiving, by the one or more processors, a selection of the virtualization mode and the one or more settings provided via the one or more user interfaces; and creating, by the one or more processors, the virtual machine from the installation media using the virtualization mode and the one or more settings.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising detecting, by the one or more processors, from metadata within the installation media, the type of operating system that is used by the installation media.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising probing, by the one or more processors, content within the installation media to detect the type of operating system.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of virtualization modes comprises one or more of the following: a full virtualization mode, a para-virtualization mode and a hybrid virtualization mode.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more user interfaces comprises one or more virtualization modes other than the plurality of virtualization modes determined to be supported by the type of operating system.
6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying, by the one or more processors, for the one or more settings a minimum hardware configuration for which to create the virtual machine.
7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving, by the one or more processors, the one or more settings from the one or more user interface identifying a setting greater than the minimum hardware configuration for which to create the virtual machine.
8 . A system comprising:
one or more processors, coupled to memory and configured to: determine a plurality of virtualization modes that are supported by a type of operating system detected within an installation media to be used to create a virtual machine; cause display of one or more user interfaces to receive a selection of a virtualization mode of the plurality of virtualization modes to be used to create the virtual machine and one or more settings to configure the virtual machine in accordance with the virtualization mode; receive a selection of the virtualization mode and the one or more settings provided via the one or more user interfaces; and create the virtual machine from the installation media using the virtualization mode and the one or more settings.
9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to detect from metadata within the installation media the type of operating system that is used by the installation media.
10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to probe content within the installation media to detect the type of operating system.
11 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of virtualization modes comprises one or more of the following: a full virtualization mode, a para-virtualization mode and a hybrid virtualization mode.
12 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more user interfaces comprises one or more virtualization modes other than the plurality of virtualization modes determined to be supported by the type of operating system.
13 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to identify for the one or more settings a minimum hardware configuration for which to create the virtual machine.
14 . The system of claim 8 , further wherein the one or more processors are further configured to receive the one or more settings from the one or more user interface identifying a setting greater than the minimum hardware configuration for which to create the virtual machine.
15 . A system comprising:
one or more processors, coupled to memory and configured to: probe content within an installation media to detect the type of operating system provided by the installation media for creating a virtual machine; determine a plurality of virtualization modes that are supported by the type of operating system detected within the installation media; identify for creating the virtual machine from the installation media a selection of a virtualization mode of the plurality of virtualization modes and one or more settings for the virtualization mode; and create the virtual machine from the installation media using the virtualization mode and the one or more settings.
16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to detect the type of operating system using metadata probed within the content of the installation media.
17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to probe the within the content of the installation media while the installation media is being stored and prior to creating the virtual machine with the installation media.
18 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to cause display of one or more user interfaces to receive a selection of a virtualization mode of the plurality of virtualization modes to be used to create the virtual machine and the one or more settings to configure the virtual machine in accordance with the virtualization model
19 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of virtualization modes comprises one or more of the following: a full virtualization mode, a para-virtualization mode and a hybrid virtualization mode.
20 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more settings identify minimum hardware configuration for which to create the virtual machine.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
