Claims

Abstract

Methods of reducing dermal penetration of at least one active ingredient in a topically applied product using compositions comprising siloxane polymers are disclosed. In some aspects, the active ingredient is an antimicrobial agent, especially benzalkonium chloride, 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride, and combinations thereof.

         22 . A composition, comprising:
 A) an insect repellent;   B) a cyclic methylsiloxane having 4-5 silicon atoms;   C) a siloxane copolymer comprising a reaction product of:
 a) an hydridopolysiloxane selected from the group consisting of:
 i) R 3 SiO(R′ 2 SiO) a (R″HSiO) b SiR 3 ; 
 ii) HR 2 SiO(R′ 2 SiO) c SiR 2 H; and 
 iii) HR 2 SiO(R′ 2 SiO) a (R″HSiO) b SiR 2 H; 
 wherein: R, R′, R″ are, each independently, C 1 -C 6 alkyl; a is 0 to about 250; b is about 1 to about 250; and c is about 0 to about 250; and 
 
 b) an α,ω-diene having the general formula:
   CH 2 ═CH(CH 2 ) x CH═CH 2  
 
 
 wherein x is about 1 to about 20; and 
   D) an ester of an aromatic alkoxylated alcohol and fatty acid.   
     
     
         23 . The composition according to  claim 22 , wherein the ester of an aromatic alkoxylated alcohol and fatty acid has the formula: R′O-[Alk-O]—R, wherein R′ is an organic moiety that contains at least one aromatic nucleus, R″ is a fatty alkyl group; and -[Alk-O-] is a C 1 -C 20 alkyoxy spacer. 
     
     
         24 . The composition according to  claim 22 , wherein the ester of an aromatic alkoxylated alcohol and fatty acid is PPG-3 benzyl ether ethyl hexanoate. 
     
     
         25 . The composition according to  claim 22 , wherein the cyclic methylsiloxane having 4-5 silicon atoms has a boiling point less than 250° C., and a viscosity of 0.65 to 5 centistrokes. 
     
     
         26 . The composition according to  claim 22 , wherein the cyclic methylsiloxane having 4-5 silicon atoms is cyclopentasiloxane. 
     
     
         27 . The composition according to  claim 22 , wherein the siloxane copolymer comprises a dimethicone crosspolymer. 
     
     
         28 . A composition, consisting of an insect repellent, dimethicone crosspolymer, cyclopentasiloxane, and benzalkonium chloride. 
     
     
         29 . A method treating a skin surface, comprising applying to the skin a composition, comprising:
 A) an insect repellent;   B) a cyclic methylsiloxane having 4-5 silicon atoms;   C) a siloxane copolymer comprising a reaction product of:
 a) an hydridopolysiloxane selected from the group consisting of:
 i) R 3 SiO(R′ 2 SiO) a (R″HSiO) b SiR 3 ; 
 ii) HR 2 SiO(R′ 2 SiO) c SiR 2 H; and 
 iii) HR 2 SiO(R′ 2 SiO) a (R″HSiO) b SiR 2 H; 
 wherein: R, R′, R″ are, each independently, C 1 -C 6 alkyl; a is 0 to about 250; b is about 1 to about 250; and c is about 0 to about 250; and 
 
 b) an α,ω-diene having the general formula:
   CH 2 ═CH(CH 2 ) x CH═CH 2  
 
 
 wherein x is about 1 to about 20; and 
   D) an ester of an aromatic alkoxylated alcohol and fatty acid.   
     
     
         30 . The method according to  claim 29 , wherein the ester of an aromatic alkoxylated alcohol and fatty acid has the formula: R′O-[Alk-O]—R, wherein R′ is an organic moiety that contains at least one aromatic nucleus, R″ is a fatty alkyl group; and -[Alk-O-] is a C 1 -C 20 alkyoxy spacer. 
     
     
         31 . The method according to  claim 29 , wherein the ester of an aromatic alkoxylated alcohol and fatty acid is PPG-3 benzyl ether ethyl hexanoate. 
     
     
         32 . The method according to  claim 29 , wherein the cyclic methylsiloxane having 4-5 silicon atoms has a boiling point less than 250° C., and a viscosity of 0.65 to 5 centistrokes. 
     
     
         33 . The method according to  claim 29 , wherein the cyclic methylsiloxane having 4-5 silicon atoms is cyclopentasiloxane.
