Abstract

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a device that has a processing system including a processor; and a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations including selecting a downsampling technique for removing points from a point cloud in a volumetric video; selecting a data reduction percentage for a target bitrate for streaming the volumetric video; downsampling the point cloud in each frame of the volumetric video for the target bitrate using the downsampling technique and data reduction percentage selected, thereby creating a downsampled volumetric video; and compressing and encoding the downsampled volumetric video, thereby creating an encoded volumetric video. Other embodiments are disclosed.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the data reduction percentage is selected based on a compression ratio used to encode the volumetric video.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the point cloud downsampling technique is selected based on visual quality.

7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the point cloud downsampling technique is selected from a group comprising random simplification, grid simplification and hierarchy simplification.

8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein a streaming server selects a compressed copy of the volumetric video from a plurality of encoded volumetric videos based on an adaptive bitrate and streams the volumetric video selected.

9 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the processing system comprises a plurality of processors operating in a distributed computing environment.

10 . A non-transitory, machine-readable medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system including a processor, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:
determining a plurality of target bitrates for a volumetric video, wherein the volumetric video comprises a plurality of point clouds, wherein each frame of the volumetric video comprises a point cloud in the plurality of point clouds; selecting a point cloud downsampling technique from a plurality of point cloud downsampling techniques; selecting a data reduction percentage for a target bitrate in the plurality of target bitrates; and downsampling the point cloud in each frame of the volumetric video for the target bitrate using the point cloud downsampling technique and data reduction percentage selected, thereby creating a downsampled volumetric video comprising a downsampled point cloud in each frame.

11 . The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the data reduction percentage is selected based on a compression ratio used to encode the volumetric video.

12 . The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein a manifest file identifies a supported bitrate, a decoding scheme, and information needed to render each volumetric video.

13 . The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the point cloud downsampling technique is selected based on visual quality.

14 . The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the point cloud downsampling technique is a hierarchy simplification.

15 . The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the operations further comprise:
downsampling the point cloud in each frame of the volumetric video for each target bitrate in the plurality of target bitrates using a plurality of data reduction percentages selected, thereby creating a plurality of downsampled volumetric videos; creating a manifest file for each compressed copy of the downsampled volumetric videos; and storing compressed copies of the downsampled volumetric videos and the manifest files on a streaming server.
