Abstract
Disclosed are method and apparatus that enable a cardless payment transaction to be executed from a merchant point-of-sale (POS) system. A user is enabled to check in at a merchant by using a mobile device of the user and then to pay by simply appearing at the merchant and mentioning his name. By emulating card read events and intercepting receipt printer outputs, the technique cleanly integrates into a conventional merchant POS system, without the need for customized software or hardware to accommodate individual POS vendor-proprietary application programming interfaces (APIs).

39 . A method comprising:
associating an account of a first user with information regarding a payment instrument of the first user and with personal identifying information (PII) of the first user; receiving, by one or more servers of a cardless payment service system and via a transaction-initiating software module executing on a first computing device of a first user registered with a cardless payment service system, an indication of intent from the first user to initiate a payment transaction with a second user registered with the cardless payment service system; based at least in part on receiving the indication of intent, sending, by the one or more servers and to a second computing device, the indication of intent and the PII of the first user; receiving, by the one or more servers and from a second computing device associated with the second user, an indication that the identity of the first user has been verified, the indication based at least in part on the PII of the first user; receiving, by the one or more servers, an indication that a transaction-triggering module of an application executing on the second computing device initiated the payment transaction.
40 . The method as claim 39 recites, wherein the transaction-initiating software module is a module of a mobile payment application executing on the first computing device.
41 . The method as claim 39 recites, wherein the transaction-initiating software module is separate from a mobile payment application that is executing on the first computing device.
42 . The method as claim 39 recites, wherein the PII comprises a name of the first user, an image of the first user, and an encrypted financial account number associated with the first user.
43 . The method as claim 42 recites, wherein the encrypted financial account number comprises an encrypted debit card number or an encrypted credit card number.
44 . The method as claim 39 recites, wherein the indication of the intent comprises user input to a graphical user interface presented on a display of the first computing device.
45 . The method as claim 39 recites, wherein verifying the identity of the first user comprises verifying by confirming that an image displayed on the second computing device matches the user who is present in person at the second computing device.
46 . The method as claim 39 recites, wherein initiating the transaction further comprises sending, by the application executing on the second computing device to a remote authorization entity, a payment authorization request for the payment transaction.
47 . The method as claim 46 recites, wherein sending the payment authorization request comprises sending the payment authorization request to a credit card issuer via one or both of a card acquirer or a card network.
48 . The method as claim 46 recites, wherein sending the payment authorization request comprises sending the payment authorization request to the one or more servers associated with the cardless payment service system.

The method as claim 46 recites, wherein the payment authorization request comprises data emulating a payment instrument read event for the payment transaction, wherein the payment instrument read event is associated with the payment instrument and the payment instrument comprises at least one of a magnetic stripe, an integrated circuit (IC) card, a barcode, a quick response (QR) code, an optical code, or a radio frequency identifier.
50 . The method as claim 39 recites, wherein the transaction-initiating software module is provided to the first computing device by the one or more servers of the cardless payment service system.
51 . A method comprising:
detecting, by a transaction-initiating software module executing on a first computing device associated with a first user registered with a cardless payment service system, an indication of an intent to initiate a payment transaction between the first user and a second user registered with the cardless payment service system; sending, by the transaction-initiating software module and to one or more servers associated with the cardless payment service system, a request that a financial account number for a financial account of the first user be sent to a second computing device associated with the second user, the financial account number having been stored by the one or more servers associated with the cardless payment service system when the first user registered with the cardless payment service system and prior to the payment transaction; and receiving by the one or more servers and from the second computing device and at least partly in response to receiving the financial account number, an indication that the second computing device initiated the transaction at least in by outputting, to an application executing on the second computing device, payment authorization request data including or based at least in part on the financial account number.
52 . The method as claim 51 recites, wherein the transaction-initiating software module is included in a mobile payment application.
53 . The method as claim 51 recites, wherein the first user is a customer of a merchant and the second user is the merchant.
54 . The method as claim 53 recites, wherein the second computing device comprises a point-of-sale (POS) device.
55 . One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform actions comprising:
associating an account of a first user with information regarding a payment instrument of the first user and with personal identifying information (PII) of the first user; receiving, via a transaction-initiating software module executing on a first computing device of a first user registered with a cardless payment service system, an indication of intent from the first user to initiate payment transaction with a second user registered with the cardless payment service system; sending, by the one or more servers associated with the cardless payment service system and to a second computing device, the indication of intent and the PII of the first user; receiving, by the one or more servers and from the second computing device, an indication that the identity of the first user has been verified, the indication based at least in part on the PII of the first user; receiving an indication that a transaction-triggering module of an application executing on the second computing device initiated the payment transaction using the information
56 . The one or more non-transit computer-readable media as claim 55 recites, wherein the transaction-initiating software module is a module of a mobile payment application executing on the first computing device.
57 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as claim 55 recites, wherein the transaction-initiating software module is separate from a mobile payment application that is executing on the first computing device.
