Methods and systems for smart api polling for predicted delivery events
Abstract
When a merchant ships a product to a buyer, the merchant may wish to push shipping status updates to the buyer. Moreover, the buyer may wish to receive a notification when a shipping event has occurred in order to remain informed regarding the shipping status of their package without actively checking the package's status with the carrier. In some embodiments, there is provided a computer-implemented system and method that obtains a tracking identifier for a package, transmits the tracking identifier to a carrier's computing interface (e.g. the carrier's API), receives back an indication of the most recent shipping event, predicts the time of a next shipping event at least based on the most recent shipping event, and retransmits the tracking identifier to the computing interface based on the predicted time of the next shipping event.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
obtaining a tracking identifier for a package; transmitting the tracking identifier to a computing interface provided by a carrier, and in response receiving an indication of a most recent shipping event for the package; generating a predicted time of a next shipping event for the package, the predicted time generated based at least on the most recent shipping event; and retransmitting the tracking identifier to the computing interface, the tracking identifier retransmitted at a time that is selected based on the predicted time of the next shipping event.
2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:
based on a response from retransmitting the tracking identifier, determining that the next shipping event has not occurred; and responsive to determining that the next shipping event has not occurred, retransmitting the tracking identifier to the computing interface again at a subsequent time closer to the predicted time of the next shipping event.
3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , further comprising:
retransmitting the tracking identifier to the computing interface a plurality of times, until a response is received indicating that the next shipping event has occurred, the retransmitting occurring with increasing frequency closer to the predicted time of the next shipping event.
4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein beginning at a particular point in time at or subsequent to the predicted time of the next shipping event:
when a response is not yet received indicating that the next shipping event has occurred, the retransmitting the tracking identifier to the computing interface the plurality of times comprises: retransmitting the tracking identifier with less frequency than the frequency at which the tracking identifier was retransmitted leading up to the predicted time of the next shipping event.
5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:
based on a response from retransmitting the tracking identifier, determining that the next shipping event has occurred; and responsive to determining that the next shipping event has occurred, transmitting an indication of the next shipping event to a device associated with a recipient of the package.
6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , further comprising setting the next shipping event as the most recent shipping event, and reperforming the generating and the retransmitting steps.
7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein generating the predicted time of the next shipping event comprises:
predicting an identity of the next shipping event based on the most recent shipping event in order to obtain a predicted next shipping event; and generating the predicted time based on a time at which the most recent shipping event occurred and the predicted next shipping event.
8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein the predicted next shipping event is obtained by predicting the identity of the next shipping event based on the carrier, the most recent shipping event, and a delivery address of the package.
9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein generating the predicted time comprises determining the predicted time based on a previously computed average time between the most recent shipping event and the predicted next shipping event.
10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , wherein generating the predicted time comprises adding the average time to the time at which the most recent shipping event occurred to result in the predicted time.
11 . The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , further comprising updating the average time upon determining an actual time between the most recent shipping event and the predicted next shipping event.
12 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the computing interface is a first computing interface and the carrier is a first carrier, and wherein the method further comprises:
receiving an indication that the next shipping event has occurred in response to retransmitting the tracking identifier to the first computing interface; predicting, based at least on an identity of the next shipping event, that the first carrier has changed or will change to a second carrier; subsequently transmitting the tracking identifier to a second computing interface of the second carrier instead of to the first computing interface of the first carrier.
13 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving an indication that the next shipping event has occurred in response to retransmitting the tracking identifier to the computing interface, wherein the indication that the next shipping event has occurred includes the time at which the next shipping event occurred; comparing the time at which the next shipping event occurred to the predicted time; in response to the time at which the next shipping event occurred exceeding the predicted time by a particular amount: transmitting, to a device associated with a recipient of the package, an indication that delivery of the package may or will be delayed.
14 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving an indication that the next shipping event has occurred in response to retransmitting the tracking identifier to the computing interface; comparing the next shipping event to a predicted next shipping event; in response to the next shipping event not being equal to the predicted next shipping event: transmitting, to a device associated with a recipient of the package, an indication that delivery of the package may or will be delayed.
15 . A system comprising:
a memory to store a tracking identifier for a package; at least one processor to:
obtain the tracking identifier from the memory;
instruct transmission of the tracking identifier to a computing interface provided by a carrier, and in response receive an indication of a most recent shipping event for the package;
generate a predicted time of a next shipping event for the package, the predicted time generated based at least on the most recent shipping event;
instruct retransmission of the tracking identifier to the computing interface, the tracking identifier retransmitted at a time that is selected based on the predicted time of the next shipping event.
16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein when a response from the retransmission of the tracking identifier indicates that the next shipping event has not occurred, the at least one processor is further to:
instruct retransmission of the tracking identifier to the computing interface again at a subsequent time closer to the predicted time of the next shipping event.
17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein when the next shipping event has not occurred, the at least one processor is to:
instruct retransmission of the tracking identifier to the computing interface a plurality of times, until a response is received indicating that the next shipping event has occurred, the instruction of retransmission occurring with increasing frequency closer to the predicted time of the next shipping event.
18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein beginning at a particular point in time at or subsequent to the predicted time of the next shipping event:
when a response is not yet received indicating that the next shipping event has occurred, the at least one processor is to instruct retransmission of the tracking identifier with less frequency than the frequency at which the tracking identifier was retransmitted leading up to the predicted time of the next shipping event.
19 . The system of claim 15 , wherein when a response from the retransmission of the tracking identifier indicates that the next shipping event has occurred, the at least one processor is further to:
transmit an indication of the next shipping event to a device associated with a recipient of the package.
20 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one processor is to generate the predicted time of the next shipping event by performing operations including:
predicting an identity of the next shipping event based on the most recent shipping event in order to obtain a predicted next shipping event; and generating the predicted time based on a time at which the most recent shipping event occurred and the predicted next shipping event.
21 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the at least one processor is to generate the predicted time by performing operations including determining the predicted time based on a previous computed average time between the most recent shipping event and the predicted next shipping event.
22 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the computing interface is a first computing interface and the carrier is a first carrier, and wherein the at least one processor is further to:
receive an indication that the next shipping event has occurred in response to the retransmission of the tracking identifier to the first computing interface; predict, based at least on an identity of the next shipping event, that the first carrier has changed or will change to a second carrier; subsequently instruct transmission of the tracking identifier to a second computing interface of a second carrier instead of to the first computing interface of the first carrier.
23 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one processor is further to:
receive an indication that the next shipping event has occurred in response to retransmitting the tracking identifier to the computing interface, wherein the indication that the next shipping event has occurred includes the time at which the next shipping event occurred; compare the time at which the next shipping event occurred to the predicted time; in response to the time at which the next shipping event occurred exceeding the predicted time by a particular amount: instruct transmission of an indication that delivery of the package may or will be delayed, the transmission for a device associated with a recipient of the package.
24 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one processor is further to:
receive an indication that the next shipping event has occurred in response to retransmitting the tracking identifier to the computing interface; compare the next shipping event to a predicted next shipping event; in response to the next shipping event not being equal to the predicted next shipping event: instruct transmission of an indication that delivery of the package may or will be delayed, the transmission for a device associated with a recipient of the package.
25 . A computer-readable medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:
obtaining a tracking identifier for a package; instructing transmission of the tracking identifier to a computing interface provided by a carrier, and in response receiving an indication of a most recent shipping event for the package; generating a predicted time of a next shipping event for the package, the predicted time generated based at least on the most recent shipping event; instructing retransmission of the tracking identifier to the computing interface, the tracking identifier retransmitted at a time that is selected based on the predicted time of the next shipping event.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
