Session description protocol mechanisms for signaling radio access network capabilities in multimedia telephony sessions
Abstract
Systems, apparatuses, methods, and computer-readable media are provided for negotiating Radio Access Network (RAN)-level capabilities toward improving end-to-end quality of Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) communication sessions, such as Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) calls. Disclosed embodiments include Session Description Protocol-based mechanisms to signal the RAN-level capabilities. The RAN-level capabilities may include, for example, delay budget information signaling, Transmission Time Interval bundling, RAN frame aggregation, RAN-assisted codec adaptation or access network bitrate recommendation, and/or other like capabilities. Other embodiments may be described and/or claimed.

26 . A user equipment (UE) comprising:
memory circuitry to store program code of a Multimedia Telephony Service for Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (MTSI) client; and processor circuitry coupled with the memory circuitry, the processor circuitry to operate the MTSI client to:
generate a Session Description Protocol (SDP) message to indicate support for one or more radio capabilities, the one or more radio capabilities including an access network bitrate recommendation (ANBR) capability, and
send the SDP message to another MTSI client operated by another UE.
27 . The UE of claim 26 , wherein the processor circuitry is to operate the MTSI client to:
generate the SDP message to include a media-level SDP attribute of ‘anbr’ to indicate the ANBR capability.
28 . The UE of claim 27 , wherein the processor circuitry is further to operate the MTSI client to:
generate the SDP message to include the media-level SDP attribute of ‘anbr’ when the MTSI client supports ANBR including use of ANBR with dynamic bitrate adaptation.
29 . The UE of claim 28 , wherein the processor circuitry is further to operate the MTSI client to:
generate the SDP message to include the media-level SDP attribute of ‘anbr’ further when the MTSI client supports radio access network (RAN)-assisted codec adaptation.
30 . The UE of claim 29 , wherein the processor circuitry is further to operate the MTSI client to:
generate the SDP message to include the media-level SDP attribute of ‘anbr’ further when the UE is able to query and receive ANBR information for uplink and downlink from a serving base station.
31 . The UE of claim 27 , wherein the SDP message is a first SDP message, the one or more radio capabilities are first radio capabilities, and wherein the processor circuitry is further to operate the MTSI client to:
identify one or more second radio capabilities of the other UE within a second SDP message obtained from the other UE; and determine that the other UE supports the ANBR capability when the one or more second radio capabilities includes the ANBR capability.
32 . The UE of claim 31 , wherein the processor circuitry is further to operate the MTSI client to:
obtain an ANBR message when the other UE supports the ANBR capability.
33 . The UE of claim 32 , wherein the ANBR message is to trigger an adaptation decision for a local uplink channel or a local downlink channel.
34 . The UE of claim 32 , wherein the processor circuitry is further to operate the MTSI client to:
determine a currently allowed bitrate from the obtained ANBR message.
35 . The UE of claim 32 , wherein the ANBR message is a recommended bit rate medium access control (MAC) control element.
36 . One or more non-transitory computer-readable media (NTCRM) comprising instructions, wherein execution of the instructions by one or more processors of a first user equipment (UE) is to cause the first UE to:
generate a Session Description Protocol (SDP) message to indicate support for an access network bitrate recommendation (ANBR) capability; and send the SDP message to a second UE.
37 . The one or more NTCRM of claim 36 , wherein execution of the instructions is to cause the first UE to:
generate the SDP message to include a media-level SDP attribute of ‘anbr’ to indicate the ANBR capability.
38 . The one or more NTCRM of claim 37 , wherein execution of the instructions is to cause the first UE to:
generate the SDP message to include the media-level SDP attribute of ‘anbr’ when the MTSI client supports ANBR including use of ANBR with dynamic bitrate adaptation.
39 . The one or more NTCRM of claim 38 , wherein execution of the instructions is to cause the first UE to:
generate the SDP message to include the media-level SDP attribute of ‘anbr’ further when the MTSI client supports radio access network (RAN)-assisted codec adaptation.
40 . The one or more NTCRM of claim 38 , wherein execution of the instructions is to cause the first UE to:
generate the SDP message to include the media-level SDP attribute of ‘anbr’ further when the UE is able to query and receive ANBR information for uplink and downlink from a serving base station.
41 . The one or more NTCRM of claim 37 , wherein the SDP message is a first SDP message, the one or more radio capabilities are first radio capabilities, and execution of the instructions is to cause the first UE to:
identify one or more second radio capabilities of the other UE within a second SDP message obtained from the other UE; and determine that the other UE supports the ANBR capability when the one or more second radio capabilities includes the ANBR capability.
42 . The one or more NTCRM of claim 41 , wherein execution of the instructions is to cause the first UE to:
obtain an ANBR message from a serving base station when the other UE supports the ANBR capability.
43 . A user equipment (UE) comprising:
memory circuitry to store program code of a Multimedia Telephony Service for Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (MTSI) client in terminal; and processor circuitry coupled with the memory circuitry, the processor circuitry to operate the MTSI client in terminal to:
identify an access network bitrate recommendation (ANBR) capability of a remote device from a session description protocol (SDP) offer message obtained from the remote device,
generate an SDP answer message to indicate support of the ANBR capability by the UE, and
send the SDP answer message to the remote device.
44 . The UE of claim 43 , wherein the processor circuitry is to operate the MTSI client in terminal to:
generate the SDP answer message to include a media-level SDP attribute of ‘anbr’ to indicate the support of the ANBR capability.
45 . The UE of claim 44 , wherein the processor circuitry is to operate the MTSI client in terminal to:
