What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A polynucleotide encoding an IFNλ variant polypeptide comprising one or more amino acid substitutions that increase affinity to a cognate receptor relative to the wild-type protein, wherein the one or more amino acid substitutions comprise a substitution in at least one or both of Q26 and E84, where numbering is relative to SEQ ID NO:3. 
     
     
         2 . A cell that produces an IFNλ variant polypeptide comprising one or more amino acid substitutions that increase affinity to a cognate receptor relative to the wild-type protein, wherein the one or more amino acid substitutions comprise a substitution in at least one or both of Q26 and E84, where numbering is relative to SEQ ID NO:3.
