Claims

Abstract

A display includes a plurality of pixel chips, chixels, provided on a substrate. The chixels and the light emitters thereon may be shaped, sized and arranged to minimize chixel, pixel, and sub-pixel gaps and to provide a seamless look between adjacent display modules. The substrate may include light manipulators, such as filters, light converters and the like to manipulate the light emitted from light emitters of the chixels. The light manipulators may be arranged to minimize chixel gaps between adjacent chixels.

What is claimed is:

         2 . A modular light emitting diode (LED) display comprising:
 a support frame;   a first display unit configured to releasably attach to the support frame, the first display unit comprising:
 a first plurality of pixels affixed to a first substrate including a right uppermost pixel affixed approximate the uppermost right portion of the first substrate, 
   wherein each pixel of the first plurality of pixels has first substrate horizontal pixel gaps in the horizontal direction between horizontally adjacent pixels and first substrate vertical pixel gaps in the vertical direction between vertically adjacent pixels; and   a second display unit configured to releasably attach to the support frame, the second display unit comprising:
 a second plurality of pixels affixed to a second substrate including a left uppermost pixel affixed approximate the uppermost left portion of the second substrate, wherein each pixel of the second plurality of pixels has second substrate horizontal pixel gaps in the horizontal direction between horizontally adjacent pixels and second substrate vertical pixel gaps in the vertical direction between vertically adjacent pixels, 
   wherein the first display unit and the second display unit are configured to releasably attach to the support frame such that when attached, the horizontal distance between the right uppermost pixel and the left uppermost pixel is equivalent to (i) the respective first horizontal pixel gap between the right uppermost pixel and an adjacent pixel of the first plurality of pixels and (ii) the respective second horizontal pixel gap between the left uppermost pixel and an adjacent pixel of the second plurality of pixels.   
     
     
         3 . The modular LED display of  claim 2 ,
 wherein each pixel the first plurality of pixels comprises at least three sub pixels affixed to a respective substrate and arranged such that the respective horizontal and vertical pixel gaps between sub-pixels on adjacent pixels is uniform across the entirety of the first display unit, and   wherein each pixel the second plurality of pixels comprises at least three sub pixels affixed to a respective substrate and arranged such that the respective horizontal and vertical pixel gaps between sub-pixels on adjacent pixels is uniform across the entirety of the second display unit.   
     
     
         4 . The modular LED display of  claim 3 , wherein the at least three subpixels of each pixel are configured such that when activated the pixel can generate a plurality of different colors. 
     
     
         5 . The modular LED display of  claim 3 , wherein the at least three subpixels of each pixel comprises a red LED, a green LED, and a blue LED. 
     
     
         6 . The modular LED display of  claim 3 , wherein the at least three subpixels of each pixel are arranged in a linear arrangement on the respective substrates such that a first subpixel of the at least three subpixels is a top subpixel and a second subpixel of the at least three subpixels is a bottom subpixel. 
     
     
         7 . The modular LED display of  claim 3 , wherein the first and second display units are configured to magnetically attach to the support frame. 
     
     
         8 . The modular LED display of  claim 3 , wherein the first and second substrates comprise a flexible material. 
     
     
         9 . A modular light emitting diode (LED) display comprising:
 a support frame;   a first display unit configured to releasably attach to the support frame, the first display unit comprising:
 a first plurality of pixels affixed to a first substrate, each pixel of the first plurality of pixels comprises at least three subpixels affixed to a respective substrate each subpixel being arranged on the first substrate such that the respective horizontal and vertical subpixel gaps between subpixels on adjacent subpixels is uniform across the entirety of the first display unit; and 
   a second display unit a display module configured to releasably attach to the support frame, the second display unit comprising:
 a second plurality of pixels affixed to a second substrate, each pixel of the first plurality of pixels comprises at least three subpixels affixed to a respective substrate each subpixel being arranged on the second substrate such that the respective horizontal and vertical pixel gaps between sub-pixels on adjacent pixels is uniform across the entirety of the second display unit, 
   wherein the first display unit and the second display unit are configured to releasably attach to the support frame such that when attached, the respective horizontal and vertical pixel gaps between pixels is uniform across the entirety of the modular LED display.   
     
     
         10 . The modular LED display of  claim 9 , wherein the at least three subpixels of each pixel are configured such that when activated the pixel can generate a plurality of different colors. 
     
     
         11 . The modular LED display of  claim 9 , wherein the at least three subpixels of each pixel comprises a red LED, a green LED, and a blue LED. 
     
     
         12 . The modular LED display of  claim 9 , wherein the at least three subpixels of each pixel are arranged in a linear arrangement on the respective substrates such that a first subpixel of the at least three subpixels is a top subpixel and a second subpixel of the at least three subpixels is a bottom subpixel. 
     
     
         13 . The modular LED display of  claim 9 , wherein the first and second display units are configured to magnetically attach to the support frame. 
     
     
         14 . The modular LED display of  claim 13 , wherein the first and second substrates comprise a flexible material. 
     
     
         15 . A modular light emitting diode (LED) display comprising:
 a support frame;   a first display unit a display module configured to releasably attach to the support frame, the first display unit comprising:
 first plurality of pixels affixed to a first substrate including a right uppermost pixel affixed approximate the uppermost right portion of the first substrate, wherein each pixel of the first plurality of pixels has first substrate horizontal pixel gaps in the horizontal direction between horizontally adjacent pixels and first substrate vertical pixel gaps in the vertical direction between vertically adjacent pixels; and 
   a second display unit a display module configured to releasably attach to the support frame, the second display unit comprising:
 a second plurality of pixels affixed to a second substrate including a right bottommost pixel affixed approximate the bottommost right portion of the second substrate, wherein each pixel of the second plurality of pixels has second substrate horizontal pixel gaps in the horizontal direction between horizontally adjacent pixels and second substrate vertical pixel gaps in the vertical direction between vertically adjacent pixels, 
   wherein the first display unit and the second display unit are configured to releasably attach to the support frame such that when attached, the vertical distance between the right uppermost pixel and the right bottommost pixel is equivalent to (i) the respective first vertical pixel gap between the right uppermost pixel and an adjacent pixel of the first plurality of pixels and (ii) the respective second vertical pixel gap between the right bottommost pixel and an adjacent pixel of the second plurality of pixels.   
     
     
         16 . The modular LED display of  claim 15 ,
 wherein each pixel the first plurality of pixels comprises at least three sub pixels affixed to a respective substrate and arranged such that the respective horizontal and vertical pixel gaps between sub-pixels on adjacent pixels is uniform across the entirety of the first display unit, and   wherein each pixel the second plurality of pixels comprises at least three sub pixels affixed to a respective substrate and arranged such that the respective horizontal and vertical pixel gaps between sub-pixels on adjacent pixels is uniform across the entirety of the second display unit.   
     
     
         17 . The modular LED display of  claim 16 , wherein the at least three subpixels of each pixel comprises a red LED, a green LED, and a blue LED. 
     
     
         18 . The modular LED display of  claim 15 , wherein the at least three subpixels of each pixel are arranged in a linear arrangement on the respective substrates such that a first subpixel of the at least three subpixels is a top subpixel and a second subpixel of the at least three subpixels is a bottom subpixel.

The LED display unit of  claim 15 , wherein the at least three subpixels of each pixel are arranged in a linear arrangement on the respective substrates such that a first subpixel of the at least three subpixels is a top subpixel and a second subpixel of the at least three subpixels is a bottom subpixel. 
     
     
         19 . The modular LED display of  claim 15 , wherein the attachment mechanism comprises a magnetic attachment mechanism. 
     
     
         20 . The modular LED display of  claim 15 , wherein the first substrate comprises a flexible material.
