Abstract

The invention described herein provides methods for treating a disease or disorder associated with angiotensin receptor signaling in a patient exhibiting elevated levels of ATIR autoantibodies. The invention also provides methods of identifying a patient suffering from a disease or disorder associated with angiotensin receptor signaling that may benefit from treatment with an angiotensin receptor blocker. Patients with elevated levels of ATIR autoantibodics are identified as candidates that particularly benefit from treatment with an angiotensin receptor blocker.

         2 . A method of identifying a patient suffering from a disease or disorder associated with angiotensin receptor signaling that may benefit from treatment with an angiotensin receptor blocker, comprising determining the level of angiotensin receptor autoantibodies in a patient sample; comparing the level of angiotensin receptor autoantibodies in the patient sample to a reference standard comprising between about 5 mg/mL to about 10 mg/mL of angiotensin receptor autoantibodies, wherein a higher level of angiotensin receptor autoantibodies in the patient sample compared to the reference standard indicates that the patient may benefit from treatment with an angiotensin receptor blocker. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the reference standard is between 7 μg/mL to about 9 μg/mL. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the reference standard is about 8.2 μg/mL 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the disease or disorder is associated with aberrant angiotensin type 1 receptor (AT 1 R) signaling. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the disease or disorder is typically treated with an angiotensin receptor blocker. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the disease or disorder is an inflammatory disorder. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the disease or disorder is chronic inflammation. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the disease or disorder is a wound healing disorder. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the disease or disorder is diabetes, atherosclerosis, obesity, hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, congestive heart failure, or cancer. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the patient sample is a blood sample. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the patient sample is a blood plasma sample. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the angiotensin receptor blocker is losartan, irbesartan, olmesartan, candesartan, valsartan, fimasartan, or telmisartan, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
