Abstract

The present disclosure provides apparatus and methods for determining the sequence of a nucleic acid. The apparatus comprises electrodes that form a tunnel gap through which the nucleic acid can pass. The electrodes comprise a reagent that is capable of selectively interacting with a nucleobase of the nucleic acid sequence. When the reagent interacts with a nucleobase, a detectable signal is produced and used to identify the nucleobase of the nucleic acid. Advantageously, the apparatus of this disclosure is specific to identifying nucleic acids.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A compound of formula (I): 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         wherein R 1  is (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl or (C 1 -C 6 ) alkoxy; 
         R 2  is selected from the group consisting of thiol, disulfide, and amine; and 
         R 3  is H, an electron withdrawing group or an electron donating group; 
         ring A or ring B is substituted with R 1 -R 2 ; and 
         ring C or ring D is substituted with R 3 ; 
         provided that (i) when ring A is substituted with R 1 -R 2 , ring C is substituted with R 3 ; and (ii) when ring B is substituted with R 1 -R 2 , ring D is substituted with R 3 . 
       
     
     
         2 . The compound of  claim 1 , wherein R 1  is (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl. 
     
     
         3 . The compound of  claim 1 , wherein R 1  is (C 1 -C 3 ) alkyl.
